Should You Marie Kondo Your Hair Routine? Probably Not. (Here’s what you can do to stay a little saner instead.)
How you can channel Marie Kondo for hair and simplify your hair routine with the help of a pro.
With spring right around the corner, your house isn’t the only thing that can benefit from some major cleaning. As you pack away your winter clothes and swap out your fluffy comforter for lightweight sheets, you should also update your hair care routine.
Just as winter comes with its own set of hair woes, so does spring. Thankfully, whether you have dark brown hair or ash blonde strands, dealing with said woes is as simple as swapping out your winter hair products for spring-friendly versions. Not sure how to update your haircare routine? We tapped Danielle Keasling, Matrix artistic director, and Cory Hoffman, Matrix brand ambassador and stylist, is here to fill you in on everything you need to know about the right way to change your spring hair care routine.
By the time spring comes around, the hair doesn’t need as much heavy moisture and can sometimes feel weighed down.
This is why I turn to Biolage R.A.W. Re-Hab Clay Mask for stressed and sensitize hair. Strengthen and condition brittle, dry hair twice a week in preparation for spring services.
Even though spring comes with its own set of hair concerns, you don’t have to ditch your favorite winter hair care products completely. Hoffman says products like Matrix Total Results Miracle Creator Multi-Tasking Hair Mask can be used all year round.
The stylist also says you don’t typically have to swap out your shampoo from season to season. The shampoos from the Biolage range are suitable to use during any season.
Finding products that care for hair is essential, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun with your routine. If you want to stock your bathroom with products that will make your hair look good and on-trend, Keasling’s got just the thing for you.
“Natural texture is huge right now,” the stylist says. “Embrace it by using products high in moisture to enhance and help define natural texture. One of my favorites is the Biolage R.A.W. Curl Defining Styling Butter—curl definition without crunch!”
Hoffman says the ideal spring hair care routine is quite simple. The stylist recommends shampooing with a product like Biolage SmoothProof Shampoo followed by a lightweight conditioner like Biolage Aqua-Gel Conditioner to help moisturize strands without weighing them down.
Follow your shampoo and conditioner with a leave-in treatment like Biolage Hydrasource Daily Leave-In Tonic which nourishes your hair with light moisture as it primes and protects your strands.
As for her favorite styling product, Hoffman is all about volume for spring.
“I like to style with the Biolage Volumebloom Full-Lift Volumizer Spray for touchable volume,” she says.
While this springtime hair care routine only covers the basic hair care products, Hoffman recommends personalizing your routine with products that address your specific hair needs.
“One of my favorite things about Biolage is that there is something for any hair type and need,” the stylist says.
If you have curly hair, pick up Biolage Curl Defining Elixir which delivers lasting curl control to create beautiful shiny curls. If you can’t get enough of your blow dryer, try Biolage Styling BlowDry Glotion. It protects hair from heat damage up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.
No matter what your hair type, one spring woe everyone deals with is frizz caused by humidity. If you’re looking for a product to help you get your frizz under control, Keasling says to look no further than the Biolage R.A.W. Frizz Controlling Styling Spray.
“April showers bring May flowers and of course, humidity...Protect your style with Biolage R.A.W. Frizz Control Styling Spray for frizz free control—it’s like a raincoat for your hair,” she says.
Lastly, your strands aren’t the only thing that needs a little extra TLC in the springtime. Just like your hair has different needs in the spring, so does your skin—including your scalp. Keasling recommends incorporating a scalp oil into your springtime hair care routine.
“Leave your scalp feeling smooth and refreshed with the Biolage R.A.W. Scalp Care Rebalance Scalp Oil,” she says. “With its paraben and silicone-free formula, your scalp will feel soothed, resulting in a healthy balanced scalp.”
If you arm yourself with the right hair products and follow Keasling and Hoffman’s hair care routine, you’ll have flawless hair all spring long.
