With a reputation for haircare wisdom and knowledge of the latest hair novelties, there isn’t a hair trend or tip unobserved by Nicole.

Wondering how to best care for your natural curls and coils? Céline Marquet-Gonzales, French hair expert and brand ambassador for Mizani, understands the specific needs of curly. Here are her three recommended ways to handle your delicate locks and avoid textured hair breakage in the future.

What makes curly hair more prone to damage?

Curly strands can be “flat and shaped like a figure eight, which creates their kinks,” Marquet-Gonzales says. As a result, oils from the scalp can have more difficulty coating the entirety of your strands. This lack of total coverage can leave your ends vulnerable and contribute to your hair becoming “incredibly dry, adding to its brittleness.”

As a result, your hair can be prone to damage and breakage, but don’t fret—preventative measures can help combat this problem. Before introducing any major changes to your routine, always ask your stylist for a second opinion in order to practice a 100 percent personalized treatment.

Use gentle daily cleansers.

Marquet-Gonzalez stresses the importance of choosing gentle shampoos and conditioners, such as the products found in Mizani’s True Textures range. Retain moisture and help maintain the natural curl pattern for touchable texture with the gently cleansing silicone-free, sulfate-free, paraben-free Moisture Replenish Shampoo.

Tweak your drying technique.

“One of the most effective ways to naturally define your curls is the wash-and-go technique, as long as you do it right!” Marquet-Gonzalez says. “As long as you are patient, it can work.”

Instead of drying your hair with a blow dryer or a rough towel (which can weaken your fragile curly hair), leave your hair soaking wet and apply your leave-in treatment in order to lock it. Wrap your hair up into a pineapple on top of your head using a silk scarf or microfiber towel—don’t take your hair down until it is completely dry, otherwise it will begin to frizz!

To be sure that you’re doing all you can for your hair type, consult your stylist for any personal modifications to this drying technique.

Invest in intensive treatments.

When it comes to hair, there’s no such thing as caring too much. The best way to give your hair some real TLC is to go to your stylist for a truly intensive treatment.

“A leave-in product is significantly more intensive than any of your normal hair care products, so it will reward you with richer benefits,” Marquet-Gonzales notes.

She loves using the True Textures Intense Moisture Replenish Treatment on her clients for a curls-targeted deep conditioning session. Your stylist can also smooth on Mizani’s Supreme Oil Hair Treatment.

“If you want to leave your ‘fro untampered with, opt for products that are teeming with rich oils that can define your natural curls, all the while providing deep hydration,” the expert adds.

Fortify your natural hair with these three salon professional tips on how to repair and defend against hair damage. Your textured hair can say bye-bye to breakage.
