If you’re always on the lookout for the latest hair trend, chances are good you’ve heard people sing the praises of hair oil. These days it seems everyone has a story about how one hair oil completely transformed their mane. However, with so many hair oils on the market how do you know which one will benefit your hair? That’s where Jeremy Taylor, L’Oréal Professionnel artist and brand ambassador, comes in. Taylor is breaking down everything you need to know about hair oils and how to pick the right one for you.

What are the benefits of hair oil?

While hair oils and hair serums sometimes look and feel very similar, they don’t serve the same purpose. Hair serums coat your strands to provide concentrated and targeted treatments that address many different hair concerns. While many hair oils sometimes address several hair concerns, Taylor says the main purpose of hair oil is to provide, “Intense nourishment, shine, and smoothness.”

While almost any hair oil will help your hair look and feel nourished, shiny, and smooth, Taylor says the key to getting the most out of your hair oil is to make sure you pick the right one for your strands. When trying to decide which hair oil is right for you, he says you should take your hair type and any hair woes into consideration.

Not sure where to start? Taylor recommended his favorite hair oils for the most common hair types and concerns.

If you have thin hair:

L’Oreal Professionnel Oil Light Masque

Taylor does not recommend applying oil directly to thin strands as thick oils can sometimes weigh fine strands down. Instead, the stylist suggests incorporating an oil-based hair mask like L’Oreal Professionnel’s Oil Light Masque into your hair care routine. Blended with ginger essential oil and osmanthus extract, the luxurious L’Oreal Professionnel Oil Light Masque lightly nourishes, detangles, and illuminates the look of hair. Hair looks smooth and shiny with a light-weight finish.

If you have thick hair:

L’Oreal Professionnel’s Oil Rich Masque

Lucky for you, thick locks absolutely drink up hair oil—so almost any oil-based product is going to work well with your mane. However, if you’re unsure which product you want to begin with, consider incorporating an oil-based hair mask like L’Oreal Professionnel’s Oil Rich Masque into your touring. Formulated with Fair Trade argan oil and blended with myrrh extract, this rich, buttery mask disciplines thick, unruly hair with a nourishing feel.

If you have curly hair:

L’Oreal Professionnel Mythic Oil Detangling Spray

If you have curly hair, you’re likely no stranger to oil-based hair products. While hair oil and curly locks go together like peanut butter and jelly, too many oil-based products can cause major buildup. If you want to incorporate a new oil into your hair care routine, look for one that can pull double duty like L’Oreal Professionnel’s Oil Detangling Spray. Formulated with ginger essential oil and osmanthus extract, this leave-in oil emulsion detangles normal to fine hair, makes combing through wet curls easier, and leaves hair looking nourished and healthy.

If you have straight hair:

L’Oreal Professionnel Mythic Oil Huile Originale

L’Oreal Professionnel’s Mythic Oil Huile Originale is perfect for ladies with straight locks because it will nourish and add shine to your hair without weighing it down. Infused with natural argan oil, this formula softens and adds radiance to hair. Its lightweight and fluid texture is ideal for detangling after cleansing and adding radiance before or after blow-drying.

If you’re dealing with frizz:

L’Oreal Professionnel Mythic Oil Huile Radiance

If you need to deal with frizzy hair in a flash, Taylor recommends simply coating your strands with a lightweight oil that will make your hair look hydrated and shiny, such as L’Oreal Professionnel’s Mythic Oil Huile Radiance. Formulated with cranberry oil, this hair oil adds nourishment, illuminates sensitized hair, and softens from root to tip.

If you’re dealing with breakage:

L’Oreal Professionnel Mythic Oil Crème Universelle

According to Taylor, “People dealing with breakage need a product that’s going to smooth the hair and provide nourishment and shine.” L’Oreal Professionnel Crème Universelle, does all of that and then some. The 3-in-1 product can be used as a pre-shampoo treatment, rinse out conditioner, or a blow dry cream. Formulated with Fair Trade argan oil and almond oil, this creamy balm glides onto the hair to provide a nourishing feel, smoothing the look of the hair fiber.
