If we were stranding on an island and could only choose one eye-enhancing makeup product to bring along, it would be mascara. Just a few coats of the beloved product leave your lashes darker, longer, and more defined. Still, we could do without the hassle of daily application and the undereye smudging after a few hours of wearing it. If you dream of waking up with fuller, longer lashes without relying on mascara, it might be time to consider eyelash extensions.

Thinking eyelash extensions may be right for you? We asked Clementina Richardson, celebrity lash expert and founder of Envious Lashes in New York City, to answer all of your burning questions about the salon service. Keep scrolling for everything you need to know to take your lashes to new lengths!

What are eyelash extensions?

Eyelash extensions are semi-permanent synthetic, faux mink, or silk fibers that are attached to the base of your natural lashes.

“They are carefully applied one at a time using a specially formulated semi-permanent glue that will not irritate or damage the natural lash,” Richardson explains. “The lash is only applied to an existing lash and not to the skin.”

Unlike the falsies you pop on at home before a night out, eyelash extensions can be customized for each client. They’re available in various lengths ranging from six to 18 millimeters as well as a few different curl options. Over the course of a one to two-hour appointment (depending on your desired look), a licensed professional will apply longer, fuller lashes while enhancing, lifting, and opening the eyes.

Why exactly are so many opting for this professional service instead of using at-home lash products? According to Richardson, it’s all about convenience.

“Women of all ages are realizing that the hassle of applying and removing their mascara is a thing of the past,” Richardson says.”It’s also such an unbelievable time saver and great for moms and busy working women on the move.”.

How long do eyelash extensions last?

Like so many of our favorite beauty services, eyelash extensions don’t last forever. With the right placement and maintenace routine, you can expect your lashes to last about six weeks.

Can you wear mascara with eyelash extensions?

If you’re someone that’s 100 percent committed to the look of your eyelashes, it’s likely you apply mascara every single day. Eyelash extensions, however, eliminate the need for mascara altogether.

“I don’t recommend mascara with lash extensions as it creates additional weight to the natural lashes and will cause the bond to break.” Richardson explains. “If applied correctly by a licensed professional, you won’t need to wear any mascara as your lash extensions will look beautiful on their own.”

If you still feel the urge to spruce up your lashes, Richardson recommends staying away from waterproof mascara formulas and, if you can, only apply the product to your bottom lashes.

Is it bad to get eyelash extensions?

If you’ve heard any rumors about eyelash extensions, it’s likely about how the service can cause damage and breakage to your natural lashes. As long as you’re in the hands of a licensed professional, however, Richardson says there’s no need to worry.

“Lash extensions alone will not ruin your lashes...Damage to the natural lashes is the result of improper application, or the stylist not selecting the correct type of lash for an existing natural lash,” Richardson says.

How much does it cost to get eyelash extensions?

Eyelash extensions range in cost depending on where you go, the expert applying them, and the material of the lashes you choose. In general, a full-set of eyelash extensions at most places will run you anywhere between $150 to $500.

How do you take care of eyelash extensions?

Now that you’ve achieved long, luxurious lashes, you’ll want to do everything you can to maintain them. The key to keeping your eyelash extensions in top shape is following a few essential aftercare tips. First thing’s first: Richardson recommends heading to the salon for a refill every two to three weeks.

Avoid picking or excessively touching your lashes because this can cause them to break. You should also keep your new set of lashes far away from water for the first few days post-salon.

“Avoid steam and wetting your lashes for the first 48 hours as that can cause them to shed prematurely,” Richardson says. “You can, of course, wash your face and take a shower, but just make sure that no water touches your lashes.”

As with many beauty services, your product routine will also need to change a bit.

“Only use cleansers specifically formulated to be safe for eyelash extensions,” Richardson says. “Other products may contain ingredients that can weaken the bond of your lash extensions and cause them to shed prematurely... Use an oil-free makeup remover and do not use any oil-based products and heavy creams around eyes.”
