The Vinegar Rinse: What Is It And Why Should You Be Using One
09 May 2018
In the neverending quest to create the perfect hair care routine, we’re always open to trying new products. When we heard about vinegar hair rinses—which claim to help cleanse, clarify, strengthen, and protect your hair—we had to get our hands on one.
Never heard of a vinegar hair rinse? Fear not. Ashley Giannetto, brand ambassador and education development manager of Redken haircare, styling, and Redken Brews, is here to break down everything you’ve ever wanted to know about vinegar rinses and why Redken Color Extend Vinegar Rinse is the perfect formula for you.
What is a vinegar rinse?
Everyone knows the importance of maintaining your body’s pH balance, but not many people know how important it is for your hair to maintain the proper pH balance. Something as simple as excessive exposure to sunlight or as common as daily heat styling can throw off the pH balance of your strands. When your pH balance is out of whack, your hair can begin to look and feel worse for the wear. Lucky for you, the same ingredient you use to create killer salad dressings can also be used in a salon quality formula to gently clean and refresh your hair.
Redken Color Extend Vinegar Rinse is formulated with citric acid and can help ensure your pH level is balanced.
Unlike DIY vinegar rinses that can actually strip your hair of its natural oils and even its salon color, the Color Extend Vinegar Rinse is formulated to refresh hair for more radiant color. The best part? Your hair won’t smell like vinegar!
“We have bottled up Vinegar Rinse with a gentle fragrance to counteract the smell of vinegar,” Giannetto says.
Who can benefit from a vinegar rinse?
Everyone—no matter their hair type or texture—can benefit from the pH-balancing effects of a vinegar rinse. Redken’s Color Extend Vinegar Rinse is formulated for anyone with chemically colored hair.
“When pH levels are balanced, the cuticle is better protected, helping with color maintenance and vibrancy,” Giannetto explains.
How to incorporate a vinegar rinse into your hair care routine:
A vinegar rinse is almost like a shampoo and conditioner in that it can help to cleanse and condition your hair, but that doesn’t mean it should replace those products. Even though the vinegar rinse is formulated to gently cleanse, it works best on already shampooed hair. Although you can use any shampoo you’d like, we recommend Redken Color Extend Magnetics Shampoo if you’re trying to preserve your hair color.
After your hair is nice and clean, distribute the vinegar rinse throughout your hair. Allow it to sit in your hair for three to five minutes before rinsing. For the best results, follow the rinse with a color-protecting conditioner like Redken’s Color Extend Magnetics Conditioner.
Giannetto recommends using the vinegar rinse one to three times a week for the best results.
The Redken Color Extend Vinegar Rinse is $24.00 MSRP and is available at Redken salons nationwide, ULTA, Beauty Brands, JCPenney, and lookfantastic.com starting May 2018.
