Here at Hair.com, we’ve come across many ingredients rumored to tackle various hair woes. From rice water to avocado masks, it seems like there’s always a new ingredient taking the beauty world by storm.

To understand the buzz surrounding sandalwood oil we decided to do some research on what sandalwood oil is and what it can do for your hair.

What is sandalwood oil?

Sandalwood oil derives from the woods and roots of the santalum album—better known as the Indian sandalwood tree. The oil is commonly used in aromatherapy treatments and it is a popular ingredient in many perfumes and air fresheners. In some cultures, sandalwood oil is also used in alternative medicine.

Safety and efficacy for sandalwood oil have not been realized yet, but there may be more to the sandalwood scent. In a recent study performed by the Monasterium Laboratory in Münster, Germany, researchers from the lab claimed that a receptor in the human hair follicle called OR2AT4 could “smell” the sandalwood scent.

In their research, the lab used a synthetic dupe of sandalwood odorant which has a similar odor to sandalwood and is commonly used in skin and hair care. Exposure to the scent of sandalwood stimulated the growth of keratinocyte cells in the human scalp tissue. Keratinocytes produce keratin, the protein that is the main building block of hair and promotes growth.

Can the scent of sandalwood reduce the risk of hair loss?

The research surrounding sandalwood scent is intriguing. However, because the research is still in the beginning stages, knowing the benefits is a bit premature.

Totally stumped on how to treat and prevent hair loss? A trichologist, a licensed professional who specializes in the hair and scalp, or a dermatologist who specializes in hair loss may be able to address your individual hair care needs better.

Unfortunately, there are no hair care products or treatments that are known to cure hair loss. That doesn’t mean all hope is lost, however. The right hair care products can keep your strands looking and feeling their absolute best. Minoxidil, an FDA approved topical solution, is used to treat certain types of hair loss. Consult with your doctor to determine if Minoxidil is the right treatment for you and your specific hair needs.

If you notice your hair is beginning to look thin, invest in a hair care system specifically formulated for advanced thinning hair like the Redken Cerafill Retaliate. This system of shampoo, conditioner and treatment strengthens, stimulates and nourishes so hair looks and feels fuller. The stimulating menthol formula gently cleanses to remove impurities and follicle-clogging sebum.

You may also want to consider investing in a scalp and hair treatment such as the Kérastase Specifique Scalp and Thinning Hair Treatment. The treatment helps to fight against the appearance of thinning hair, recaptures volume, shine and flexibility.

While the research on sandalwood scent is interesting, you won’t catch the ingredient anywhere near our manes anytime soon.
