This Runway Color Trend Lets You Try Pastel Hair Without Committing

If you’ve ever dreamed about trying a fantasy hair color, there’s probably one thing standing in your way: the intense maintenance routine that comes along with it. When you completely trade in your dark brown hair for a daring hue, you’re committing to a heavy maintenance routine packed with a slew of new hair products and frequent trips to the salon. However, the latest runway color trend dreamed up by Josh Wood, Redken global creative director, makes it possible to achieve pastel hair color without the commitment.

Wood debuted two new hair color techniques dubbed “color clouds” and “horizon color” as part of Mary Katrantzou’s Fall/Winter 2019 show at London Fashion Week. The collection is broken up into four categories based off of the elements—earth, wind, fire, and water—which inspired Wood’s moody hair color creation. The colorist created grungy pastel hair on each model to match the colorful vibe of Katrantzou’s collection. Woods hand-painted the muted pastel shades onto chunky, clip-in extensions using Redken City Beats color instead of working with the model’s actual hair.

“It’s very undone, rough and raw,” Wood says. “There is a natural, worn-in finish that’s almost anti-groomed and a little bit unkempt. Hair is swept across the face. There’s a lot of natural power in this show.”

What is the color clouds technique?

Woods used the color clouds techniques on the models with blonde hair. The clip-ins were painted shades of seafoam, morning dew, sky blue, cracked earth, sunset coral, and pink. They were placed to create the appearance of sporadic streaks of color throughout the hair.

“‘Color clouds’ is a combination of intense color that blurs and blends out to the palest color on the edges,” Woods says. “These pieces were added to the models that have a light hair base...the dark blondes through to the platinums."

What is the horizon color technique?

Dark-haired models were given a completely different look, with the hair pieces inserted near the crown and hairline to give off a reverse ombre effect.

“The extensions are saturated at the roots in ink, emerald green, or purple violet and faded out in reverse ombre to have paler ends,” Woods says.

If you’re interested in trying temporary pastel hair color, colorful clip-ins are officially Fashion Week approved!
