Rose gold was the color of 2017, but a new shade is on its way to steal the crown for 2018: metallic bronze hair. No longer reserved just for bags, metallic bronze is here to turn your locks into the ultimate accessory. Not exactly sure what the hype is all about? Constance Robbins, Matrix artistic educator and brand ambassador, explains why metallic bronze hair is the color to watch out for this year.
Robbins says the color is beloved for the same reason everyone loves bronze eyeshadow palettes. It look great on everyone.
“It warms up the skin and makes you glow,” the stylist says. “The same can be said for bronze hair color. Bronze hair is unique because it can be universally flattering on almost all skin tones.”
The thought of coloring your hair a metallic hue can sound daunting if you’ve never tried a fantasy shade before. However, Robbins says metallic bronze is an excellent shade for newbies.
If you’re not convinced metallic bronze hair is the color for you, Robbins says you should rely on the expertise of your colorist to steer you in the right direction.
“I like to utilize my swatches of Matrix’s SoColor Mixed Metals next to my client's skin tone to see which shades flatter them best. Sometimes clients request a shade that isn’t optimal for them, so if they can see the shade right next to their skin and eyes they are able to visualize what they will look like with their new hair color,” she explains. “Don’t be afraid to mix and match warm and cool. It gives the color more dimension and harmonizes beautifully with their skin.”
Whenever you color your hair, you should swap some of your regular hair care products for formulas that are specially formulated to help you color maintain its vibrancy. Robbins says color care is particularly important for metallic hair. Much like pastel colors, bronze shades can fade very quickly.
Robbins recommends swapping your shampoo and conditioner out for the Matrix Total Results Color Obsessed shampoo and conditioner. In addition to picking up a shampoo and conditioner with a color safe formula, we recommend cutting back on the number of times you wash your hair a week.
Depending on your natural hair color, your stylist may have to bleach your strands to lift color before adding your metallic color. It’s important to note that bleach will always damage hair and though there is no way around the effects of bleach, there is a way to minimize them. Adding a weekly deep conditioning treatment like Matrix Biolage Color Color Last Mask can help nourish and protect to help maintain the depth, tone, and shine of color-treated hair.
Run—don’t walk—to your trusted stylist to get the most breathtaking color of the year. Who knows, metallic bronze hair may just be the vibrant change you’ve been searching for your whole life.
