With a reputation for haircare wisdom and knowledge of the latest hair novelties, there isn’t a hair trend or tip unobserved by Nicole.

Want to give some shape to your long hair, but not sure which cut fits your needs? You’re looking for layers. We’ve consulted Anh Co Tran, celebrity stylist and brand ambassador for L'Oréal Professionnel, for his cutting expertise.

Layered haircuts are always in fashion for a reason. Layers not only help to create an illusion of length and volume (which is great news for those with flat or fine hair) but also can look good on just about anyone! And we love how versatile a layered cut can be, whether it’s a uniform or choppy cut.

Ready to choose your next chop? Here are three go-to layered hairstyles for long hair and the L'Oréal Professionnel products to help you style them.

Classic Long Layers

The best way to refresh your lengths is by adding long layers for something simple but always elegant. You’ll instantly seem to have more dimension and interesting texture that will prevent your locks from becoming flat and lifeless.

Don’t hesitate to play around with your varying lengths using L'Oréal Professionnel’s Tecni.Art Beach Waves Texturizing Spray for messy and effortless siren waves.

Wispy Short Layers

Short layers create much more distinction between different lengths, making them perfect for hairstyles such as a rocker chic shag. For something more romantic, try this fashion-inspired rebellious blowout. You can lightly flip the ends of your blow-dried layers with a bristle brush for a windswept effect and truly whimsical look. Try using Tecni.Art Fresh Dust Dry Shampoo to refresh your blowout between washes.

Those with thick hair should request a parallel undercut in order to remove bulk for a lightweight feel and more movement. That way, your short layers will be much more prominent. As a bonus, the best part about this cutting technique is that it helps your haircut to last longer.

The grow-out is very important to me...more so than the actual look itself.

Edgy Choppy Layers

Whether your layers are long or short, adding choppy ends will surely make you stand out in the crowd. The best way to do this? Ask your stylist about the point cutting technique. Rather than simply cutting hair straight across, point cutting involves carefully pointing scissors upwards, on an angle.

“It’s a precise technique, but it brings a lot of internal movement,” Tran says. “If you put internal structure into a bob or any regular haircut, it will make the haircut last longer.”

Once your cut is complete, your stylist can show you how to properly sculpt your choppy bits into a shaggy look using Tecni.Art Architexture Matte Defining Paste.

Note: Layered hairstyles for long hair also look great with bangs.

“A lot of people are asking for bangs, a lot of fringe—blunt, short, piece-y, all different types, so there’s not one certain look anymore,” Tran says. Before you go straight for the plunge with microbangs, make sure to talk with your stylist about which fringe would best suit your face shape and hair type.

Your next chop will have you falling back in love with layered cuts!
