While many women spend hundreds of dollars on extensions and weaves to create the illusion of thick locks, only women with naturally thick hair know it’s not always as glamorous as it looks. All of that hair requires some serious upkeep, which sometimes means spending hours in front of the mirror figuring out just what to do with it.

On the positive side, thick hair means the possibilities are endless. You can flawlessly rock a bob, long layers, a fishtail braid or even a top knot—no clip ins required. If you’re sick of rocking the same tired ponytail and messy bun, we’ve got some style solutions for you. We’ve rounded up the 11 best haircuts and styles for ladies with thick, luscious locks. Don’t be shy.

Bob

A bob is a perfect way to remove a lot of heavy length from your ‘do while making sure you stay looking incredibly chic. If you’re looking for an even lighter style, ask your stylist to razor the end of your bob for a more textured look. The razored ends will add tons of movement and remove any bulky weight.

Pixie with Bangs

Cutting off all of your heavy hair may sound pretty tempting, but consider leaving just enough length for some killer bangs. Your full bangs will show off just how thick your hair is without any of the weight or hassle of long locks.

Layers

Layers are the best way to add movement to your hair without getting rid of too much length. There are tons of ways cut this timeless ‘do, from classic layers to textured layers. Talk with your stylist to decide which cut is perfect for you.

Bangs

Take full advantage of your hair’s thickness and add some major style to your already killer cut with the addition of full bangs. Because of your hair’s fullness you can pull off anything from baby bangs to long shaggy bangs that look killer swept to the side.

The Wet Look

To achieve this style, you’ll have to begin by getting your hair wet. You can just fill up a spray bottle with water and spray your hair until it is damp. If you’re concerned about making sure your hair feels hydrated, use a spray leave in conditioner. The liquid formula will dampen your hair while ensuring it feels hydrated.

Once your hair is saturated—but not soaking wet—work a light hold gel through your hair to set your texture. Allow your hair to dry before walking out of the door. The resulting style will look chic and shiny all-day long.

Deep Side Part

This simple styling hack will give you a whole new look in just seconds. All you have to do is make a part on the left or right side of your head. With the majority of your hair piled on one side of the part, you’ll achieve some much-needed volume—no teasing necessary.

Sleek and Straight

If you’re sick of fighting with your hair to get sky high volume, give it a rest and let your mane lie flat for a sleek look. Begin at the back of your head, taking 2-inch sections of clean, dry hair at a time. Spray each with a heat protectant and slowly pass over it with a flat iron followed by a comb. If necessary, do an additional pass with the flat iron to get your hair as straight and sleek as possible. Continue flat ironing 2-inch sections of hair until you’ve completed your entire head.

Low Ponytail

When you’ve got thick locks, the weight of piling your hair on top of your head can sometimes lead to a major headache. Skip the headache but keep the style and simplicity of a sky-high ponytail by positioning it just a little lower.

First, decide if you would like your hair parted down the middle or no part at all. One you’ve decided, gather your hair at the nape of your neck and secure it with a strong elastic. If you want to add just a little more style to your pony, take a few strands from the base of your ponytail and wrap them around the elastic. Secure the strands with a bobby pin.

Afro

Take full advantage of your hair’s thickness and let your curls flourish with a voluminous afro. To achieve this look, apply a leave-in conditioner and a styling cream to clean, damp hair. Allow your hair to dry about halfway. Using a diffuser attached to a blow dryer, completely dry your hair. Once it’s dry, use a hair pick all around your head to achieve maximum volume. Finish your look with a light spritz of shine spray.

Fishtail Braid

Use an elastic to secure a loose ponytail in your desired position. Next, divide the ponytail tail into two equal sections. To create the fishtail effect, take a 1/2-inch section of hair from the outside of left ponytail and cross it over to the right ponytail. Repeat on the opposite side, taking a section from the outside of the right ponytail over to the left.

Continue crossing over the opposite sections of the hair until you reach the end of the braid. Secure the end of the braid with an elastic or a small clear rubber band, removing the elastic from the nape of the neck to give the braid a seamless look. For a final touch, take full advantage of your hair’s thickness and pancake the braid for a voluminous look.

Top Knot

Thanks to your thick mane, there’s no need to use a hair donut to create the perfect top. To begin, gather your hair on the top of your head and secure a ponytail with a strong elastic in your desired position. Once the ponytail is secure, begin to wrap your hair around the elastic until you’ve formed a bun. To complete your look, use several bobby pins to keep the top knot in place. For a more unfinished look, allow a few pieces of your hair to escape the bobby pins.
