What It's Like To Be A Father And A Stylist

Man cutting sons hair for fathers day

It’s no secret that dads are superheroes. And when you’re a father and a hair stylist, your powers only multiply. Only a father whose a stylist can come home after spending 12 hour on their feet washing, cutting, and styling hair and still manage to have five dad jokes ready to go. Wondering what it takes to be a master stylist and a world-class father? In honor of Father’s Day, we sat down with five dads making waves in the hair industry to find out what it’s really like to be a father and a stylist.

Mikey Denton, Baxter of California Brand Ambassador

Mikey Denton’s precision haircuts and insanely detailed diagrams have made him a top educator at Baxter of California, but the thing he loves being known for the most is a father to his three young sons.

What do your kids think about your job?
“They like it. I cut their hair and style them up sometimes. My oldest is 11, and he is getting more into how he looks. So now he styles his hair, wears cologne, and even has had his hair colored.”

What advice would you give to your kids if they wanted to follow in your footsteps?
“To really learn patience and understanding. Also to actually listen to what their clients want (unlike the times they choose not to listen to me when I tell them to clean up after themselves).”

What’s the perfect Father’s Day gift?
“A gift certificate to a very nice spa. My kids like to wrestle (which can really hurt me), and I stand all day. Dad needs a massage.”

George Garcia, Redken Brand Ambassador

George Garcia tackles fatherhood with the same larger-than-life personality he brings to his signature hair cuts and colors.

What’s the best part about being a father in the hair industry?
“First of all, I love it! A lot of the time, I find myself using my acquired ‘father skills’ in my salon life. Like guiding hairdressers and hopefully filling them with as much of my experience and wisdom as I can to help prepare them for what they might go through or experience in their career.”

What do your kids think about your job?
“When my kids were young, they loved coming to the salon to see their dad! I loved it, and so did my clients. They love to watch me work and see what dad actually does when he says, ‘Gotta do work!’”

What’s the perfect Father’s Day gift?
“For me, it would be a surprise day off! With my kids, of course. In which I get to spend all day making new memories with them, the kind of memories you always talk about when you get together. ‘Hey, Dad, remember the time we,’ those kind of memories are priceless!”

Sam Villa, Redken Global Artistic Director

Sam Villa may be known all over the world as one of the best hair stylists of his time, but to his young son Mateo, he’s simply dad.

What’s it like to be a father in such a busy industry?
“Working with Redken as the global artistic ambassador involves a lot of travel, and now that I have my son Mateo, I find it more difficult to leave as sometimes I can be gone for ten days in a row. Yet, it’s always so exciting to come home and see how his personality has evolved and all the new things he can do, and that makes me much more anxious to get home.”

What’s the most rewarding part about being a dad?
“When Mateo looks at me eye to eye and all of a sudden gives me a huge hug with his head on my shoulder and holds me like he really means it. I can feel the unconditional love!”

What’s the perfect Father’s Day gift?
“A complete day off with the family, anything from Redken Brews or a brand-new pair of blades!”

Daniel Roldan, Matrix Artistic Director

When he’s not traveling the world and educating the future stylists of tomorrow, Daniel Roldan loves to spend as much time as possible with his three children.

What advice would you give your kids if they wanted to follow in your footsteps?
“First, to be a great hairstylist, you’ll need to have the passion within you, to trump any obstacle you may encounter along the way. Second, try to push the boundaries of your hair education as far as you can. It will be so rewarding every time you get up in the morning and go to work.”

What’s the most rewarding part about being a dad?
“I’m so proud of my two older kids who are clearly on their way to being amazing young adults. With my little one who is one and a half, I would say the most rewarding thing is just being able to revert myself back into being a big silly kid most of the time, just to see and hear her laugh!”

What’s the perfect Father’s Day gift?
“Matrix Style Link Matte Definer Beach Clay and Matrix Style Link Smooth Setter Smoothing Cream are the perfect Father’s day gifts for the stylist or barber in your life.”

Dan Csicsai, Matrix Artistic Director

Dan Csicsai is a second-generation stylist who passed along his love of hair to his youngest daughter.

What’s it like to be a father is such a female dominated industry?
“I think what it has taught me is to be more aware of what women think and aware of their perceptions on life and challenges. I guess it’s made me more sensitive, which has come in handy a great deal in raising my two daughters.”

What do your kids think about your job?
“I’m a second generation beauty industry professional. My kids not only had my mother, but my wife’s mom was a hairdresser as well. Their mother is also a hairdresser as well. So they’ve really grown up with it. All of the crazy stories we have from behind the chair are always part of our family get-togethers.”

What advice would you give to your kids if they wanted to follow in your footsteps?
“I feel that as a parent, it's our job to guide our kids into a career that best fits them and their passion. After all, you work a large portion of your life, and you should really love what you do. It would be sad to work in a career that you don’t like doing. My youngest daughter Breck showed signs of having the gift and was the most artistic out my three kids but, she didn’t want to be a hairdresser. I really had to talk her into it. She’s been doing it for ten years now and loves it.”

What’s the perfect Father’s Day gift?
“A foot massage or spa day—hairdressers are always the last ones to take care of our beauty needs.”
