Jennifer Lopez Slayed A Twisted Updo On The Red Carpet

On October 9, some of the biggest names in music walked the red carpet. Any time this many celebs gather in one place, we already know we’re going to get some serious fashion and hairstyle inspiration. From androgynous haircuts to killer outfits, we're always looking forward to what celebs will bring to the red carpet next. There are always a select few, however, whose red carpet looks stand out amongst the crowd. This year, Jennifer Lopez completely stole the show.

The iconic triple threat looked stunning as she walked the red carpet in a hot pink, floor-length cutout gown. Even though we couldn't get enough of her dress, our eyes immediately went to her hairstyle, created by Redken brand ambassador and celebrity hairstylist Chad Wood.

Lopez decided on a twisted, loose updo for the event, a departure from her usual over the top looks. While we’ve seen a lot of celebs hit the red carpet with chic, sophisticated updos, we love seeing Lopez slay a more simple, effortless variation of the look.

If you’re as obsessed with J.Lo’s updo as we are, you’re in luck. With our step-by-step guide and a few trusted hair products, the look can be yours in no time!

Prepare your hair for heat styling by applying a few spritzes of the Redken Iron Shape 11 from your roots down to your ends. This lightweight, thermal heat protection hairspray is perfect for use with flat irons and curling irons up to 450 degrees to protect your hair, add shine and reduce frizz. Then, use a dime-sized amount of Redken Satinwear 04 on the ends of your hair for a bit of polish and an added layer of protection.

For the next step, you’ll need a blow dryer and a round brush. For this look, Woods used the ghd AIR Hair Dryer. Begin blow drying with a round brush to smooth the hair while adding a bit of lift at the root.

Then, follow up with a flat iron like the ghd Platinum+ Styler to touch up the hair around your face and on your ends.

Spray a few spritzes of the Redken Triple Dry 15 from your roots to the mid-lengths of your strands to create effortless airy texture and lift. Use the 1-inch ghd Curve Classic Curl Iron to style loose waves throughout your hair.

Once the waves are complete, allow your hair to cool before moving on to the next step. Gather all of your hair into a high ponytail and secure it with a hair tie. Take a fine-toothed comb and tease your hair into a messy top knot , using hairpins as you go to hold the look in place.

Pull out a few face-framing pieces of hair from the pony to add a bit of softness to the look. Set the look in place with a few spritzes of Redken Triple Take 32, the highest hold hairspray with volumizing spray that gives hair long lasting body, while protecting from frizz and giving hair humidity protection.

Now that you know all the steps to recreating this stunning twisted updo look, it’s time to get to styling!
