When people say the phrase “beauty is pain,” they’re usually referring to women. From waxing to threading and everything in between, there’s nothing too painful to endure in the name of beauty. However, any man who’s committed to making sure their facial hair looks on point at all times knows that women aren’t the only people who deal with pain in the quest to look stylish. What pain are we referring to? Razor burn.

Beards and razor burn have gone hand in hand for as long as anyone can remember—but it doesn’t have to be this way. Evan Georgopoulos, Baxter of California brand ambassador and barber, is revealing his tips on how to help prevent razor burn. If you follow his three simple steps, you’ll have a razor burn-free shave in no time.

Prep

While we often warn against about the dangers of using heat on hair, heat is actually your friend when you’re looking to prevent razor burn.

“The easiest way to help prevent your skin from razor burn is to heat it up,” Georgopoulos says.

Heating up your skin helps open pores and lift facial hair, which allows you to make cleaner passes while shaving. There are several ways to heat up your skin to prep for shaving. In Georgopoulos’ barber shop, he sprays a hot towel with Baxter of California Shave Tonic. The formula helps open pores and lifts facial hair pre-shave, before placing it on his client’s face for a few minutes.

If it is unrealistic for you to recreate the hot towel method at home, the barber suggests taking a hot shower or even heading to the gym and jumping in the sauna followed by a few sprays of the Shave Tonic.

Now that your face and beard are properly prepped, it’s time to shave.

Shave

Prepping your skin may be the most important step in your shaving routine, but how you shave your face is a close second. Before you bust out the razor, investing in a quality shaving cream can mean the difference between a smooth or rough shave. We suggest giving Baxter of California’s Super Close Shave Cream a try. The hydrating shave cream provides a protective cushion between the skin and razor for a close, comfortable shave.

When it comes time to shave your face, Georgopoulos suggests limiting the number of times you pass over your face.

Think of being very efficient with your strokes when shaving. The more times you pass an area of skin with a razor, you are potentially taking a layer of skin off each time...Some razor handles have three blades, five blades—even six or seven! Each layer removed makes your skin that much more vulnerable to irritation, redness, ingrown hairs, and razor burn.

Evan Georgopoulos

After you’ve prepped and shaved you’re just about done—but there’s one more step you absolutely can’t skip.

Soothe

While the first two steps of your shave routine are the most important when trying to prevent razor burn, soothing your skin after you shave is still crucial. Many men credit their aftershave with preventing razor burn, but Georgopoulos says that’s just untrue. He compares aftershave to using aloe after a long day out in the sun.

“Aftershave has cooling qualities and offers your skin some moisture and comfort, but it won't prevent the burn,” he says. “It’s the things you do to your face before the shave that will determine your skin’s true destiny.”

While aftershave products like Baxter of California After Shave Balm don’t actually prevent razor burn, they can hydrate, soothe, and protect skin while combating the serious dryness caused by daily shaving. Follow your aftershave with a daily moisturizer to keep your skin looking and feeling as healthy as possible.

Georgopoulos recommends Baxter of California’s Oil-Free Moisturizer. It’s formulated with plant-based hydration technology that absorbs quickly to restore the skin’s moisture barrier, leaving skin feeling smooth and refreshed with a shine-free, matte finish. He also loves Baxter of California's Super Shape, an anti-aging moisturizer for men formulated with caffeine and plant extract.

Now you’re equipped with all of the knowledge you need to have a razor burn-free shave. Your beard—and your skin—will thank you!
