Pixelated Hair Is The Coolest Hair Trend Happening Now

With the array of hair color trends sweeping the internet over the past few years, it’s hard to imagine that anything can surprise us anymore. However, among the rose brown and acid hair shades flooding our social media feeds, one viral trend stopped us dead in the midst of our social scrolling. Although you’ve probably never heard of pixelated hair before, you’re about to start seeing the multidimensional trend everywhere.

So what exactly is pixelated hair? At first glance, you may think you’re looking at random placement of color throughout the hair. However, movement to the strands reveals dozens of patterns layered sporadically within the hair to create designs that closely resemble pixels on a computer screen. Though there are plenty of pixelated hair color designs all over the internet, one particular look recently caught our eye.

Italian hair stylist Cristina Vigna took pixelated hair to the next level with this pixelated flamingo hair color, incorporating several designs of the iconic hot pink bird throughout a head of long black hair. Although the design looks a bit like choppy pink highlights in its natural state, brushing through the strands reveals numerous flamingo designs. Wondering where the inspiration for this one of a kind look came from? After spending four days studying at XPrestion Creativos in Madrid learning the group’s pixelated hair technique, hairstylist Cristina Vigna was eager to create something new based on her love of nature.

“I started by studying the patterns I had learned in Madrid, drawing them on graph paper. The most difficult part is to project the pattern...Each pattern allows you to obtain a precise design, but starting from the drawing to get to the pattern has been more difficult,” Vigna said.

Although Vigna says describing the step-by-step process without actually seeing it done is nearly impossible, she does share a bit about how she prepared to create the look.

“To make it happen I drew the pattern on graph paper and then used it as a map,” she said, “What I love the most as that feeling of unknown...because what you draw on paper doesn’t necessarily reflect what will be on the hair. That’s the challenge. Making sure that what is on the paper will be exactly the same on the hair,” said Vigna.

Looking to try a pixelated hair look for yourself? Like any bold hair color trend, finding the perfect colorist paired with a killer product routine is key to maintaining your hue for as long as possible. Before taking the plunge, be sure that you’re stylist knows exactly what you want and—more importantly—can help you achieve your desired look.

To protect your color after you leave the salon, you’re going to need a shampoo and conditioner system specifically formulated for colored hair. We recommend the Matrix Total Results Color Obsessed Shampoo and Conditioner system to help protect against fading and extend the life of your color vibrancy.

If you do decide on a pixelated hair look, be sure to show off your new ‘do using the hashtag #HairDotCom.
