On May 7th, 2018, celebrities flocked to New York a major gala event. As always, stars came dressed to impress and embody this year’s theme: “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” There were plenty of traditional nods to Catholicism including crucifixes, stained glass windows, and even one star who wore an actual altar as a headpiece. However, rising actress Sasha Lane decided to hit the red carpet with a much more celestial look.
Draped in weightless white chiffon and lace, Lane had a much more heavenly interpretation of the theme. While her ethereal gown was absolutely stunning, the only thing more breathtaking than her gown was her jewel encrusted hair. Celebrity hairstylist and Mizani brand ambassador Nai’vasha Johnson piled Lane’s locs on top of her head in a bun high enough to reach the heavens and delicately wrapped it in bejeweled bands.
“Because of the theme, we wanted to hone in on a more angelic look for Sasha because she already has such an edgy look we wanted to really showcase and celebrate the inner beauty, the inner angel in her. So that’s how we came up with the entire concept,” Johnson explains.
Johnson says she and Lane came up with the style together. While they considered other styles, they settled on this one because it most closely resembled the angelic look they were trying to achieve.
“Even though the theme was very religious, we didn’t really tap into the essence of it being a religious look. We wanted it to be very ethereal,” the stylist explains.
The best part about Lane’s look is that the bedazzled final touch is totally achievable! Johnson reveals she searched high and low for the perfect accessories and decided to adorn Lane’s ’do with faux diamond tennis bracelets.
If you have locs, you’re already got everything you need to complete this stunning style. If you don’t have locs but absolutely won’t rest until you slay this ’do, consider installing faux locs. Faux locs are a semi-permanent style in which yarn, synthetic hair, or human hair is wrapped around your natural mane to create the appearance of locs.
As with most hair installations, faux locs can last anywhere from six to twelve weeks with proper care. Faux locs have the added benefit of being considered a protective style, as the installation allows your hair to remain natural and untouched beneath the added hair.
Recreate Lane’s angelic look by following these simple steps:
Prep your hair by massaging your entire scalp with Mizani’s Scalp Care Calming lotion. Then, saturate your hair with Mizani’s 25 Miracle Milk from roots to end to nourish your hair. Section your locs into quadrants and apply a generous amount of Mizani’s new 25 Miracle Nourishing Oil (in stores June 2018) to your locs to add instant shine and moisture.
Gather all of your locs at the crown of your head and secure them into a high ponytail with a hair elastic. If your locks are too thick for that, consider swapping your elastic for a hair bungee or shoelace. Braid the entire ponytail and wrap it around itself to form a bun. Use several bobby pins to secure the bun in place. Use a dime-sized amount of Mizani’s Lived-In Sculpting Paste to brush down and shape baby-hairs along your hairline. For a finishing touch, adorn your plaited bun with jeweled tennis bracelets.
