If you’ve been cuddled up in bed avoiding the chilly winds of winter, chances are good that your hair styling routine is on pause. During the colder months, it’s natural to want to throw on a hat and head out the door. If you’re searching for a quick way to upgrade your mane with minimal effort, however, why not give hair accessories a try? Whether you’re crafting an updo, a braid, or a low ponytail, we have accessories to thank for taking our styles to the next level while making sure not a single hair falls out of place.

We recently caught wind of a throwback hair trend that’s taken the hair world by storm—hair barrettes. You might remember hair barrettes as the small clips your mom used to style your dark brown hair back in elementary school. In 2019, however, the accessory has a whole new look—appearing on some of the hottest runways of the last few months.

Jamie Wiley, Pureology artist and styling guru, expects the hair barrette trend to stick around for the long haul—or at least for the remainder of 2019. If you’re looking to get creative with barrettes, she shares a few of her favorite ways to utilize the accessory for everyday wear.

A more creative way to use a hair barrette is to wear a center part and place a barrette on the top side of both ears….If you’re wearing a sleek pony, pull the ends of pony forward and secure the ends with a barrette near the temple/ear area.
If you’re working with fine hair that tends to slip out of accessories easily, Wiley offers a piece of advice to help hair barrettes stay put all day long.

“Utilizing Pureology's Style + Protect Wind-Tossed Texture Finishing Spray and lightly spraying the back side of your barrette before placing in the hair will help secure it to the hair when it dries,” Wiley explains. “Also, adding in an additional bobby pin to anchor the barrette will give fine hair extra support.”Inspired to make hair barrettes a part of your styling routine? We’ve rounded up eight of the cutest ones on the market for less than $25.
