The natural hair movement has absolutely taken off over the last few years and it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down anytime soon. If you are natural, chances are good you already have a few go-to hairstyles. Between wash-and-gos, bantu knots, and pineapple updos—just to name a few—the possibilities are endless—and yet, it may seem as if you almost always wear the same style. We’re sure you look absolutely stunning in your go-to ‘do, but one of the best things about having natural hair is the versatility. We think it’s time to switch things up. If you’re looking for a new style to slay for your next date night, we’ve got just the look for you: a twist out.

If you’ve never learned how to do a twist out, prepare to become completely obsessed. If you’re no stranger to twist outs, we still have a little surprise in store for you. Instead of a traditional two strand twist out, Mizani brand ambassador and stylist, Daryce Brown-Willis created a three strand twist out. While a three strand twist out seems like a small departure from traditional two strand twist, the third strand helps to create more definition than you’ve ever seen in a twist out before.

To create this look, you’ll want to begin with freshly washed and dried hair. Before you begin styling your hair, prep your strands with a moisturizing leave-in conditioner like Mizani’s 25 Miracle Milk. Once you’ve saturated your strands with the leave-in conditioner, use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your locks. Then, use alligator hair clips to section off 1-inch segments of hair and twist each segment into a bantu knot to prevent it from becoming tangled.

Working with one segment at a time, release the hair clip and separate the segment into three strands. To craft a three strand twist, begin by labeling the three strands of hair one, two, and three. Cross the third strand over strands one and two. Then, cross the second strand over strands one and three. Lastly, cross the first strand over strands two and three. Continue repeating the steps until you’ve reached the end of the section. Twirl the ends of each three-strand twist to ensure it doesn’t come loose. Then, place a metal hair clip at the base of each twist to help the twists last flat instead of sticking out of your head.

Continue creating three strand twists until you’ve twisted your entire head. Next, allow your twists to completely dry. You can allow your twists to air dry, or you can speed the process along with a blow dryer or hooded dryer. Once your twists are completely dry, it’s time to release and fluff your hair! Be sure to separate the twists themselves and the strands to ensure maximum volume. Once your hair is fluffy and styled to your liking, finish your style with a shine spray like Mizani’s HD Shyne Lightweight Spray.
