Kirsten Snively always knew she was going to be a hairstylist. When you ask her how she knew, she’ll tell you simply—it’s in her blood. All you have to do is take a look at some of the stunning hairstyles Snively’s created to know she’s telling the truth, but she’s much more than a stylist.

We caught up with Snively to find out how she got her start, where her true passion lies, and the advice she thinks everyone needs to hear. We guarantee when you’re done reading, you’re going to want to book an appointment ASAP.
Snively got her start in the salon at the ripe old age of 13, when she got her first job at the hair salon down the block at her house. While she was too young to work as a stylist, she began racking up tips sweeping hair and assisting at the shampoo bowl.
If it sounds like Snively was a particularly ambitious 13-year-old, you’d be right—but it goes a little deeper than that. Snively comes from a long line of hair stylists, and her mother began showing her the ropes as soon as she was old enough to do chores.
“My mom is a hairdresser, and I’ve been around it my whole life,” she says. “I remember as a kid part of my chore list was to fold foils for her...It’s in our blood or something.”
It didn’t take long for the aspiring stylist to enroll in the beauty school connected to her high school. The only problem was: Her mother taught the course. As much as she loved following in her mother’s footsteps, spending the day in a classroom with her mom and classmates became a bit too much to handle. After high school, she decided to continue her beauty school education at the Paul Mitchell School and the rest is—as they say—history.
Snively’s been honing her craft since she was a teenager, but her career didn’t start to really take off until she began working with Kérastase in 2012. Having worked in L’Oréal Professionnel salons her entire career, the stylist knew working with a brand would help her do what she truly loves: educating. Having watched her mother teach aspiring stylists—including herself—she knew that’s where she would find true fulfillment in her career.
“That’s where I find my passion,” she explains. “I love teaching other stylists how to do all of the things that I’ve done all my life that are so simple to me...I love sharing that with other people.”
Snively’s passion for education may take her from behind the chair every once in a while, but that doesn’t mean she’s forgotten her first true love: styling. When Snively isn’t touring the country teaching aspiring stylists, you can find her at The Grand Beauty Spa in Tampa, Florida, creating flawless beach waves for her loyal clients.
“I love color, I love cutting, but my real passion is creating something visually,” she says. “What people tell me I’m the best at, is doing those effortless beach waves...I feel like I’ve just nailed that. That’s my thing.”
If you want to learn a thing or two from Snively, but you’re miles away from the sunshine state—you’re in luck! The stylist is dedicated to educating as many people as she possibly can, relying on her social media presence to spread her message.
“In 2019 I’m trying to do more step-by-step videos just to help inspire other artists and give them bits and pieces of information from my class,” she explains. “I have people message me who aren’t in Kérastase salons, and they say ‘how can I take one of your classes?’ So I think doing more step-by-step and tutorials on my Instagram is a goal of mine to help others in that way.”
When you’ve been in the game as long as Snively has been, you’re bound to be full of exceptional advice for aspiring stylists and clients alike. If you’re a potential client looking for some professional advice from a stylist at the top of her game, her advice is simple: Use heat protection!
“No matter what shampoo you use or who you go to, if you’re going to blow dry or flat iron your hair and you’re not using any type of protection, your hair is never going to reach its full potential,” she explains.
If you’re looking to follow in her footsteps, Snively warns the job is much more than just doing hair.
“Definitely, don’t do it just for fun,” she says. “Because a lot of people get into the industry and think, ‘Oh I get to do hair and makeup all day on myself,’ and that’s not what it’s like.”
At the end of the day, the hair industry is all about human interaction, and Snively says any aspiring stylist needs to be prepared.
“We’re like unlicensed therapists, scary but true,” she says. “Knowing that people are going to share these things with you that they haven’t even shared with anybody else. It’s more than just hair, remember that.”
Whether you’re looking for a mentor or a stylist to create the beach waves of your dreams, Snively is the stylist for you.
