What’s Going On In The Hair World
Penelope Cruz Tried Our Favorite Brunette Trend At The Golden Globes
07 January 2019
Award season is swinging into in full force, thanks to the Golden Globes. On January 6, the red carpet event set the bar high for the beauty looks we’ll be expecting out of our favorite celebrities this year. From pastel blue hair to pristine blowouts, we’re predicting that 2019’s award season will be full of styled, unforgettably polished looks—just the way our runway expert Guido Palau predicted months ago.
One of our all-time favorites from a beauty perspective is Penelope Cruz and her trademark dark brown hair color. The Spanish actress, 44, was nominated for Best Performance By An Actress In A Supporting Role In A Series, Limited Series Or Motion Picture Made For Television for her role as Donatella Versace in “American Crime Story: Assassination of Gianni Versace.” It wasn’t Miami glitz she brought to the red carpet, but rather timeless glamour in the way only celebrities can.
In sharp contrast to her blonde on-screen alter ego, Cruz trotted out a simple black dress in a clean silhouette and chose minimalist hair and makeup styling to match. George Papanikolas, Matrix brand ambassador and celebrity colorist, created Cruz’s color for the evening. He opted for a rich espresso with hints of sunny caramel peeking through, posting the fresh Matrix Color Sync color to his Instagram with the caption, “Sun kissed highlights.” Paired with volume at the top of the head and sleek, twisted high bun, Cruz let her face be the focal point of her ensemble.
Papanikolas says that the majority of the color hasn’t even been photographed yet, thanks to Cruz’s conservative updo.
Since the hair was pulled up and in a top knot to complement the dress, the true reveal is yet to come. I gave her my signature look with a combination of delicate baby fine highlights at the crown, and face frame, with some bold pops of color scattered through the mids and ends framing her natural part.
We’d love Cruz with almost any hair color, but it’s particularly impressive how on-trend her Globes shade is. Across social media and in salons everywhere, brunette is the word for 2019. If you’re seeking the perfect shade for warm, olive skin, take a page out of Cruz’s style book and try milk chocolate hair color with blonde accents.
For those starting with a naturally dark base, this shade should take relatively little effort to achieve with the help of a trained stylist. He or she will add dark blonde highlights, focusing on the ends and a few face-framing pieces for the most natural look.
“Highlighting on brunettes takes a special approach requiring just a few strategically placed highlights,” Papanikolas says. “The key is to enhance the color, keeping you a rich brunette without going too light or too brassy. Ask for a combination of delicate highlights framing the face and crown, paired with a few bold pieces at the natural part, and ends.”
To maintain this dramatic hue, a salon-quality care system is a must. From the L'Oréal portfolio of products, try Matrix Total Results Color Obsessed Shampoo and Conditioner. The Color Obsessed system of shampoo and conditioner helps protect against fading and extends the life of color vibrancy. For strengthened hair with brilliant shine, use the Color Obsessed Shampoo together with the Color Obsessed Conditioner and lotion spray.
Papanikolas also recommends the brand's upcoming Keep Me Vivid Collection, including Lamination Spray, Color Velvitizer, Shampoo, and Conditioner.
