Is it red? Is it purple? No, it’s maroon hair color! George Papanikolas, Matrix US celebrity stylist is our go-to guru for all things maroon, taking us through exactly what you need to know to get this majestic shade.
Join the crimson tide of red hair now with this fiery hue.
We’ve got 99 reasons and no, time ain’t one! Maroon can be yours without hours spent in the salon chair. Another fab advantage of this shade is that it is very adaptable. Workable on all skin tones and hair textures, it can be tailored to suit any complexion.
Our expert agrees.
It's a great look for brunettes who want a change with an edge.
There are many shades on the maroon spectrum, so take some #hairinspo with you to the salon. It will help your stylist get a good idea of what you’re thinking. They’ll be able to give you professional advice on the shade and its upkeep.
A dark base paired with a shade resembling a rich red wine is the color combination that dreams are made of. We love the drastically moody look of the dark maroon hair color.
For the blondes out there (or if your hair happens to be very light in color naturally), your stylist may need to darken your base color before adding the maroon hue. This will help it properly stand out. Otherwise, the shade might tip over into the pastel range. That's not a bad thing, just not what you intended!
If your base is very dark, a pre-lightening might be necessary to make your maroon pop—slightly more work, but the end results are worth it. Your stylist will be able to control the exact shade the amount of pre-lightening your hair is subjected to, making sure the tone is complementary to your coloring. This will create the perfect canvas to unleash your bright and fiery hue!
“If you need to pre-lighten first, I recommend that [your stylist] only lift to an orange. The underlying pigments can help the color adhere and keep it from fading fast," Papanikolas explains.
Maroon hair color can also look fierce in a gorgeously blended ombre. As this look typically involves the bottom half of the hair, you'll get a beautiful trendy look that is low maintenance to boot.
“I like this look best on brunettes and those with olive or dark complexions,” Papanikolas says.
While you’re in the salon chair, ask your colorist to add a bonding protecting system such as Matrix Bond Ultim8. Clients see 70 percent less damage after three lightening services using Bond Ultim8 versus three lightening services without it.
To make the most of your vibrant hue of maroon and keep the dreaded untimely fading away, limit the heat styling, avoid super hot showers, and don't over-shampoo your hair. A cleansing conditioner is a great way to shake up your hair care routine and to make sure you’re not over-shampooing. Try a product pick like Matrix Biolage Cleansing Conditioner for damaged hair.
Cleansing conditioner aside, you should still use a shampoo like Matrix Biolage ColorLast Shampoo once a week to help keep those maroon strands looking beautiful.
And, of course, don’t forget that regular salon appointments for retouches help to keep your color fresh, your roots even, and your maroon vibrant!
Radiantly red, what’s not to love about maroon?
