Make a hair bungee.
We all know the dreaded feeling of trying to create a quick ponytail before heading out of the door, only to have your hair elastic snap and break. When you’re dealing with a big, curly mane, a regular hair elastic often isn’t up for the task. Fortunately, we have a quick and easy hack to make sure you never snap one of your precious hair elastics again.
You can make your hair bungee with a hair elastic and two bobby pins. Simply attach two bobby pins to the hair elastic. When you’re ready to use it, stick one bobby pin in your hair and wrap the hair elastic around your ponytail. Then, use the second bobby pin to anchor and secure the ponytail.
If you don’t have any bobby pins or hair elastics around, you can use a shoelace! All you have to do is wrap the shoelace around the base of your ponytail and tie the shoelace to secure the style.
Stylishly camouflage short strands with braids.
When you’re growing out a short haircut, your hair being long enough to tie into a ponytail is a major milestone. While your hair might finally be long enough to tie up, some of your strands will probably be shorter than others and make your ponytail look messy. While the loose strands of hair near the top of your head may artfully frame your face, the strands in the back are a little more challenging. Rather than cover the back of your head with what feels like dozens of bobby pins, use a few strategically placed braids to solve your problem.
Flip your head over and create two or three cornrows starting at the nape of your neck in the direction of your crown. Secure each cornrow with a clear hair elastic. Then, flip your head back over, gather all of your hair at the crown of your head, and secure a ponytail with a hair elastic.
Use your bangs to create height at your crown.
Teasing is essential when you’re trying to pull off any style that has a lot of volume at your crown. When you have curly hair, however, teasing can be a little hit or miss. You may get the volume of your dreams, or you may end up with tangled coils. If it’s a teased ponytail look you’re going for, skip the teasing altogether and let your bangs do the work.
To begin, prep your strands with a volumizing product like, L’Oréal Professionnel Série Expert Volumetry Volume Spray. Then, separate your bangs from the rest of your hair and secure it with a hair elastic. Then, create a simple ponytail in your desired location and secure it with a hair elastic. Remove the hair elastic from your bangs and secure them to the crown of your head using several bobby pins.
Use multiple ponytails to create the illusion of longer hair.
If you’re hoping for a princess-length ponytail but your hair is not as long as your heart desires, this hack is for you. Instead of creating one ponytail, part your hair horizontally and create two or three ponytails stacked on top of each other. The stacked ponytails will create the illusion of a longer and fuller ponytail. No one will know but you!
Use your hair to take your ponytail from basic to polished in an instant.
This simple trick will make your ponytail look like you just came from the hair salon in an instant. After you’ve created your ponytail, take a small section of hair from the bottom of your ponytail and wrap it around your hair elastic. Secure the hair with a bobby pin for a seamless final look.
