Hippie-inspired hairstyles are some of our absolute favorites. They’re laidback, effortless, and work for just about any occasion. From bejeweled braids to flower crowns with boho waves, there are so many looks that we’ve been inspired by.
Hoping to try a groovy look this Halloween? Jackie Litscher, Redken artist, gives us a step by step breakdown on how to achieve a hippie Halloween hairstyle. Whether you’re working with dirty blonde hair or grey balayage, this hairstyle is sure to take your costume to the next level.
Prep the hair.
Use a large paddle brush to remove any snarls from your hair before you begin styling. Since you’re using hot tools, apply a few spritzes of heat protectant spray like the Redken Iron Shape 11 throughout your strands. This lightweight spray protects your hair from flat irons and curling irons up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit while adding shine and reducing frizz.
Create four strand braids.
Create a side part before you begin braiding. Working with one section at a time, create two four strand braids on each side of your part starting on the right side of your head. To create a four strand braid, take a 2-inch section of hair and separate it into four even segments. Take the first segment farthest to the right and cross it underneath the second. Then, cross the first segment over the third and bring the fourth over the third section. Repeat these steps until you reach your ends. Secure each braid at the ends using a clip.
Curl, curl, curl away.
Once you’ve braided both sides, it’s time to get to curling. Instead of working in sections to precisely curl your entire mane, grab random ½-inch pieces of hair and wrap them around your curling wand with the wand facing down to create a beachy, textured look. Hold the section on the wand for a few seconds to form the curl, then gently release it. Allow your curls to cool down before moving on to the next step.
Pancake the braids.
Start with the braid on right side of your head and begin pancaking. This technique creates the look of a larger braid. Gently pull apart each section of the braid starting with the end and working your way up. Repeat this step on the opposite side.
Secure the braids.
Pick up the four strand braid on the right side of your head and pull it to the back of your head. Use a few bobby pins to hold the braid in place. Repeat the process on the opposite side.
Add finishing touches.
Once your braids are secured, your hippie hairstyle is nearly complete. Place small flower accents randomly throughout your braids and around the crown of your head. Lock it all in with a few spritzes of Redken Windblown 05 Hairspray. This mild control volumizing & texturizing dry hairspray creates airy texture, weightless volume and flexible fullness to hold a full windswept effect.
Now that you’re equipped with all there is to know about creating a hippie Halloween hairstyle, you’re ready to try the look for yourself!
