If you’ve ever stepped through the doors of any of the three Salon Capri locations—Newton Highlands, Dedham, or downtown Boston—you’ve surely noticed the relaxed vibe. It’s almost like stepping through the front door of someone’s home—and while owner Nick Penna doesn’t actually live there, his business is definitely a family affair.
Read on to learn everything you need to know about Salon Capri—from its humble beginnings as a “neighborhood mom and pop shop” to its modern-day iteration as a hair color destination.
Salon Capri first opened its doors in 1967—more than 52 years ago, in case you’re counting—under the ownership of Penna’s parents Nicholas and Gina, who ran the Hyde Park salon as a husband and wife team. In 2000, Penna and his sister Laura took over, expanding the salon to Newton Highlands while maintaining the original location’s clientele.
Today, Penna’s mother still works the floor and sees her favorite guests while Nick takes her advice and makes sure Salon Capri never loses its spirit. All this time later, it’s a beloved community institution. The decor might have changed, but it’s been Penna’s unique responsibility to maintain the business’s reputation while still putting his spin on it.
“Clientele in some regards is third-generation clientele...which is pretty freaking amazing,” Penna says.
It’s just was well, since the Salon Capri team continues to grow as well. Today, Penna employs 105 employees—60 of them hair stylists.
In the stylist-eat-stylist salon world, maintaining a unique brand can be a challenge. What sets Salon Capri apart is that each of its three locations directly reflects the guests it serves—a conscious decision to tap into a new customer with every new salon. Because Salon Capri has been around so long, there’s a very good chance you’ll get your trendy shag cut next to a grandmother mid-styling session...and Penna wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I think it makes it a pretty unique environment…but it makes it a welcoming environment as well,” he says.
While each Salon Capri has its own flair, signature design elements unite the shops into a single, cohesive brand. The black-and-white color palette gets remixed and reused, so that no matter which location you’re at, you know you’re in for seriously good hair.
There’s a difference between stylists who just come to work every day and the ones who’ve spent their entire career growing with one business. At Salon Capri, Penna estimates 90 percent of the stylists started as apprentices and moved up—totally “homegrown,” in his words! Through constant education initiatives (each staffer is required to take at least four classes per year), the stylists stay sharp and excited about what they do, leading to a higher-than-normal retention rate.
Wondering what you’re in store for when you walk through Capri’s doors? Cuts start at $50 for a junior stylist and run all the way up to $125 for Nick himself. Single process color starts at $65, partial highlights at $120, and partial balayage at $130. Glossing is $35 and color correction pricing is available upon request. Wash and blow-dry services start at $40, while a full-on evening style will run you $75 and up. The business also offers a full range of facial, waxing, and makeup services.
A salon is only as good as the products it relies on. And so, when it comes to specialties, Penna is quick to respond.
“We are definitely a color-driven salon, for sure,” he says.
Salon Capri uses L’Oréal Professionnel color for everything from corrective shades to balayage. If you're in need of some goodies to take home after your appointment, Salon Capri has you covered.
