When it comes to baking and hair colors, chocolate is the ultimate base. You can mix chocolate with literally anything to create a delectably delicious dessert and whether you’re hoping to slay honey highlights or smoked out roots, chocolate brown hair pairs beautifully with just about any color. While we love the way chocolate brown hair looks with any color, the latest combination taking over social media may just be our favorite combo yet: chocolate lilac hair.
If you’re looking for a new fall hue that’s equal parts fun and autumnal, look no further. We tapped colorist and Kérastase brand ambassador Carly Quist, to get the scoop on everything you need to know about chocolate lilac hair.
What is chocolate lilac hair?
Chocolate lilac hair is a breathtaking combination of dark brown hair paired with a deep lilac hue. Because the chocolate and lilac shades have to be combined to create this final look, you can customize the look as much as you want. Keep the lilac subtle if you’re looking for a small change, or opt for an all-over purple hue if you’re looking for a dramatic makeover."One of my favorite ways to create this look is richening up the roots with a chocolate or dark chocolate brown shade, then blending down into a lilac shade through the mid-length and ends. I achieve that by coloring the roots first with my desired chocolate base color, then using a balayage technique to pre-lighten the mid-length and ends to the desired lightness," Quist explans. "Once processed I gloss from roots to end with desired purple shade to achieve a seamless blend going from a chocolate with a hit of lilac, to the ends with a pop of lilac."
If you’re naturally brunette, your colorist will have to use bleach to lighten your strands before applying the lilac hue of your choice. It’s important to note that bleach will always cause damage, but a professional colorist will work with you to maintain the health and integrity of your hair.
What is the maintenance like for chocolate lilac hair?
With any new hue comes a new hair care routine—and chocolate lilac hair is no different. While chocolate brown hair is often thought of as a low maintenance hair color, lilac is a fantasy shade that requires a bit more attention. How you should care for your chocolate lilac hair depends on the final hue.
If you settle on color with lots of chocolate and subtle pops of lilac, pick up products formulated to care for your brunette strands. We recommend swapping out your shampoo and conditioner for the Matrix Total Results Brass Off Shampoo and Conditioner. Best for brunettes who lighten their hair, this shampoo and conditioner system deposits balancing blue-violet pigments to reduce brassy tones.
If your chocolate lilac hair is more lilac than chocolate, pick up products formulated to help you maintain your fantasy shade like the Matrix Total Results Keep Me Vivid system. The Keep Me Vivid system comes with a shampoo, conditioner, leave-in, and lamination spray all formulated to help maintain the vibrancy of high maintenance colors like lilac.
No matter what your final hue looks like, your strands always need a bit of extra TLC after a color service. Once a week, treat your strands to a deep conditioning treatment like Matrix Total Results Miracle Creator Multi-Tasking Hair Mask.
