January brings with it a whole stack of New Year’s resolutions—many of which don’t make it more than a handful of days. This year, we’re determined to stick to our fitness goals without sacrificing good hair. Ready to join our cause?

We enlisted stylist Tori Angel to show us how she protects her hair from becoming a sweaty, frizzy mess while torching calories at the gym. The L’Oréal Professional artist created a beginner-friendly style anyone can try, even if you never venture off the elliptical. All you need is a cloth headband, texturizing spray like L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.Art Next Day Hair, two hair elastics and a scrunchie to keep your face-framing pieces from getting stringy.

Here’s to a healthy—and beautiful—2019. Scroll down to get styling.

Start with a part.

The first step in any updo—big or small—is deciding where your part will sit. Angel recommends a side part for this particular look. To begin, part your hair to the left or right side of your head. Next, spray Next Day Hair at your roots to help build height.

Go Dutch.

Starting at your hairline, take a small section of hair and begin to craft a Dutch braid. Only pull hair from the front of your head so the braid blends seamlessly with the rest of your hair.

Do it all again.

Continue braiding until you reach your ends and secure the braid with a clear hair elastic. Repeat the same steps on the opposite side.

Stabilize the whole style.

Gather all of your loose hair and secure it with a scrunchie in a low bun near the nape of your neck. This will help make sure your hair stays put without any of the annoying crease lines.

Layer up.

Place a headband over your braids before you head to your workout.

After your workout, remove your headband and scrunchie. Shake your hair out and spray it with more Next Day Hair to give your strands a disheveled, tousled look with a matte finish. For a final touch, lock your style in place with L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.Art Infinium 4 Extreme Hold Finishing Spray.
