New Part, New Hair Color: This Two-Tone Technique Is Trending

Woman with two-toned hair

Blame it on quarantine or the fact that we get so much of our mane inspiration from social media, but we’re obsessed with all things hair on TikTok. From trending haircuts and styling hacks that make our daily routines easier, to innovative hair color techniques, we’re always looking out for the latest and greatest TikTok hair trends. Most recently, a new color trend caught our eye: hair flip highlights.

Taking a page from hair color trends like peekaboo highlights, this two-toned color trend lets you test out multiple hues at once (without making it obvious at first glance). Keep scrolling to learn more about the hair flip dye trend and how to make it work for you. Hint: It’s as simple as switching your part.

What is the hair flip dye trend?

The best part about the hair flip dye trend is that to reveal your new hue, all you have to do is change your part. To create this look, your colorist will part your hair and take a section from the side, all the way around the back, and throughout the bottom section of your mane. Your colorist will color this section blonde (or whichever color you desire) while the rest of your hair remains another shade.

When you wear your hair parted down the middle, you’ll only see one streak of blonde framing your face. After you flip your hair to a deep side part, however, your hair will look almost entirely blonde, so you can easily swap back and forth between shades.

How To Try The Hair Flip Dye Trend

While we love the combination of brown and blonde, you can try the hair flip dye trend with any two contrasting hues. Add some blonde throughout any dark base, a pop of red, or give a fantasy hair color a try—the choice is yours! Be sure to book an appointment with a seasoned colorist and bring inspiration photos (or your favorite TikTok video) to ensure the best possible results. If you aren’t sure which colors work well together, take a page from the peekaboo or half and half hair color trends.

How to care for your hair once it’s colored?

No matter what color you choose to dye your hair, your mane is going to need extra TLC post-appointment. Start by swapping your regular shampoo and conditioner for a system formulated for color-treated hair. We recommend L'Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Vitamino Resveratrol Color Radiance Shampoo and Conditioner. Enriched with antioxidants and UV filters, this system helps prolong color radiance while adding shine. If you opt for a fantasy shade, choose a shampoo and conditioner like Matrix Total Results Keep Me Vivid Shampoo and Conditioner, which are formulated to keep fast-fading hair colors vibrant.

If your colorist used bleach to create your new look, your strands may feel drier and damaged than usual. That’s why we recommend adding a weekly hair mask like Biolage Hydrasource Deep Treatment Multi-Use Hair Mask to your routine. This formula infuses extremely dry hair with moisture and nourishment.
