How To Create Windblown Waves

Waves are a staple style on any red carpet, but not just any old waves will do. There are beachy waves, Old Hollywood waves, and brushed out waves, but windblown waves are without a doubt a timeless celeb favorite. Celebrity hair stylists have managed to create a style that looks both sophisticated and utterly effortless at the same time. Whether you have dark brown hair or ash blonde, this look will work for you.

If you’ve spent countless hours in front of the mirror trying to figure out just how your favorite stylist achieved that delicate balance, you’ve come to the right place. We teamed up with Cesar Ramirez, Mizani brand ambassador and celebrity stylist, to show you how to pull off flawless windblown waves every time.

This particular style is best achieved on day two or three hair. If you have textured hair, you’ll want to begin by blow drying and flat ironing your hair to create the perfect foundation for your waves. Begin by priming your hair with a formula like Mizani’s 25 Miracle Milk. The product, formulated with fennel seed oil, also acts as a moisturizing leave-in conditioner. It boasts 25 benefits including adding shine, helping to prevent split ends, and controlling frizz.

Emulsify a heat protectant like Mizani’s Thermasmooth Style and Style Again in your palms and rake it through your strands. The heat-activated styling cream provides heat protection up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit and is enriched with beeswax, cranberry seed oil, and vitamin E. The best thing about the Style and Style Again heat protectant is that it is the ultimate heat styling cream for re-shaping and re-styling. It will protect your strands through several heat activated styles without having to reapply the product.

Once your hair is thoroughly primed and protected, use a round bristle brush to blow dry your hair. After blow-drying your hair, section it off and flat iron your hair to get sleek strands. Even though your desired look is windblown, creating your style on silky, smooth locks is the best way to ensure your style has as much shine as possible.

To create the windblown waves, begin by sectioning off your hair one last time. Working with 2-inch sections of hair at a time, start at the back of your head and use your flat iron to create tousled waves. Be sure to create waves in both directions to create a natural-looking wave pattern. The best part is, Mizani’s Style and Style Again Heat Activated Styling Cream is still protecting your strands up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

For a finishing touch, spritz a texturizing spray like Mizani’s Lived-In Styling Texturizing Finishing Spray throughout your strands for the ultimate windswept style. The texturizing spray provides a finishing touch for beachy, wind-blown effects. It instantly adds a natural looking hold with a flexible soft-matte finish that lasts.
