Locs have been around for years, but there are still so many questions surrounding the popular hairstyle. If you’re looking into trying locs for yourself, you might be wondering how to properly care for and how to style them.
If you’re looking for locs expertise, Keisha Charmaine (@keishacharmaine) is your go-to girl. The influencer and founder of Love Light Locs has worn locs since 2010 and is dedicated to teaching her followers all there is to know about them.
Looking to learn a few of Charmaine’s best tips and tricks for maintaining and styling her trademark locs? We recently caught up with her at LW Salon in New York City, where Mizani stylist Ashley Lee gave her a braid out style just in time for the holidays. She dished on her daily hair care routine, products she loves, and her number one tip for anyone interested in trying locs.
When it comes to her day-to-day styling routine, Charmaine says it’s fairly low maintenance. Like so many women, frizz is a major hair concern for her. -
“Frizz is definitely a battle sometimes, especially since my hair is color treated,” she says. “Gels and satin scarves help to maintain a frizz-free look.”
When asked about her go-to gel, Charmaine says Mizani True Textures Twist And Coil Jelly is her absolute favorite. Ideal for enhancing natural curls and styling coils and curls without frizz, the jelly is formulated with coconut, olive, and marula oils for a combination of hold and hydration.
“It’s very lightweight, but it’s still effective and helps get rid of frizz,” Charmaine says.
Though her daily routine is simple, there are a few crucial steps she follows to keep her locs looking their best. The influencer mists her hair with water or leave-in conditioner every morning to help keep her hair moisturized. She also washes and conditions her hair every two weeks and uses the True Textures Twist And Coil Jelly to re-twist her locs.
Charmaine recommends the Mizani Moisture Fusion Gentle Clarifying Shampoo. It thoroughly cleanses textured hair leaving hair feeling clean, refreshed, and ready for an efficient deep moisturizing treatment. It is formulated with charcoal and a coconut-derived clarifier to remove buildup and impurities without stripping strands of moisture or shine.
While Charmaine has endless advice to share, her number tip for people with locs is simple: Don’t be afraid to wash them.
“A lot of people tell you not to wash them because they think they’re going to unravel,” Charmaine explains. “Clean locs are healthy locs and water helps with the loc’ing process, so you really need to wash them.”
