I am not a complicated woman. Aside from a bed to sleep and regular meals, the only thing I ask is to maintain a hair routine that takes less than 10 minutes. That’s not always an easily managed desire, given my hair type and dark brown hair. I’m the proud owner of a head of frizz-prone waves, some of which have a different idea about which way they’re headed than others.
As a city dweller with a commute on public transit, I’m always hunting for new ways to maximize my time. Recently, I’ve added a product to my arsenal that’s become indispensable: Kérastase Elixir Ultime L'Huile Originale. Read on for my full review of the product, which I received courtesy of the brand.
How To Use Elixir Ultime
I have collarbone-length, wavy, virgin hair, so my maintenance routine is about keeping my mane looking as healthy and shiny as possible while simultaneously embracing my natural texture. After getting out of the shower in the morning, I briefly wrap my hair in a towel before applying a dime-size dollop of air drying cream to my hair and give it a good scrunch.
This is where my commute kicks in: If it’s a weekday, I’ll try to touch my hair as little possible during the 30 or so minutes I’m stuck in the underground steam tunnel that is the New York City subway system. By the time I’m at the office, my waves are 90 percent dry and have a halo of frizz developing. Now is the time for Elixir Ultime to save the day. I apply a dime-size amount and warm it in my palms before running it over the top of my hair and throughout the ends. I even take special care to coat the hair around my face—don’t worry, this formula doesn’t result in greasy, ropy pieces like others do.
Once it’s applied, I take a fresh look at my hair: The frizz halo is nonexistent, the waves are bouncy and beautiful, and even my hair’s shine seems to have upped its reflectiveness a notch or two.
Because the formula is so light, I also make use of Elixir Ultime on days I heat style my hair. Even the smallest amount adds a finishing touch that I’m quite frankly obsessed with, along with high heat protection. On both wet and dry hair, the oil adds polish to any look I try.
Why Use Elixir Ultime
When using any hair styling product for the first time, your first glance should always be toward the claims made on the packaging (or, in this case, Elixir Ultime L'Huile Originale’s luxurious gold box). The formula is intended to act as a versatile beautifying oil for dull hair seeking shine. Infused with an exceptional blend of amla extract, Elixir Ultime also boasts camellia, argan, and corn germ oils, together with sacred marula oil. Hair is beautifully nourished with long-lasting frizz control.
As far as consistency, Elixir Ultime is an oil formula with a slight golden tinge and non-greasy feel. A little goes a long way while applying, and I often keep a makeup wipe on hand to remove any oil residue from hands after styling.
I’m very picky about the fragrances associated with my chosen hair products, so trust me when I say the scent of Elixir Ultime is surprisingly delicate. While the opulent gold packaging might imply you’re going to get smacked in the face by frankincense and myrrh, it’s actually a light floral fragrance that’s pleasant to the nose and lingers throughout the day. The scent is strong enough to make my hair smell good, but not loud enough that my coworkers wonder what perfume I’m wearing.
For the foreseeable, I'm fully committed to the Elixir Ultime lifestyle. If frizz and shine are your main concerns, why not give it a try?
