What are the most common causes of hair damage?

Before we get into how to identify and repair damaged hair, you need to know what exactly causes damaged strands. Unfortunately, there are endless amount of ways to destroy your strands. However, Rodriguez says the most common form of damage is chemical.

“Mechanical damage, which refers to damage caused by heat styling tools like curling irons, wands, straightening irons and texture irons, can damage hair. The least common and sometimes least known causes of damage can come from frequent washing and being too rough with the hair,” she says.

What are the most common signs of damaged hair?

It’s a bit daunting when it seems like everything you do to your hair has the potential to cause damage to your strands. However, just because it can damage your hair doesn’t mean it will. The key is to be able to identify the damage before it gets worse.

“The most common signs of hair damage are split ends, extreme hair breakage—hair strands that are noticeably broken off—large amounts of shedding, unmanageable, and when hair has a dull appearance,” Rodriguez explains.

If your ordinarily soft, shiny, manageable hair begins to exhibit any of these signs, you may be experiencing damage.
