The Ultimate Millennial Quarantine Hair Care Routine

Certified millennial Brittany Leitner dives into how she took advantage of quarantine to take her hair care routine to the next level.

I never thought I’d miss having a reason to wash my hair. In fact, I used to do everything in my power to avoid getting it wet at all. I’d load it up with dry shampoo sprays and hide it underneath beanies to show up to my regularly scheduled life without having to go through another wash day.

But now that I’ve been working from home since March of 2020, boy, do I miss being seen. I treat Zoom meetings like they’re fashion shows and use my walks to the grocery store as a chance to let my fully done quarantine hair bounce proudly on display. But perhaps most shocking of all, washing my hair has become a calming, multi-step routine that I actually look forward to. I guess that’s what happens when I have enough time to breathe throughout the day and don’t have to spend time rushing to and from the subway every few hours.

Alas, I think I’ve finally come up with a quarantine hair routine that will stick with me even once seeing people in person becomes a thing again. Now that I’ve learned how to take care of my hair with the right products,

Here’s everything I do now to keep my hair hydrated, silky, and smooth, now that I’ve finally learned what works for me.

The Ultimate Millennial Hair Care Routine

These days, I wash my hair every other day. I’ve given my hair a break from all that dry shampoo because now if I feel like my roots are looking greasy, I simply hop in the shower and use my favorite products. Novel idea, I know.

My hair is thick and wavy, and not ensuring my strands are hydrated can mean the difference between looking put-together post-wash or looking like my hair was absolutely fried during the air-drying process. In my hair care routine, I don’t use a hair dryer because I like to wash my hair at night and find that my hair dries pretty quickly. Usually, after watching an episode or two of my favorite show, it’s completely dry, and then I can start moisturizing it. Here’s the breakdown of what I do:

My Daily Hair Care Routine

Whether I wash my hair that day or not, I always drop about a quarter-sized amount of leave-in cream in my hands and rub it through the bottom half of my hair. It’s the easiest way to keep hair looking hydrated and to stop the ends from going haywire at the bottom. Plus, using a leave-in conditioner like L’Oréal Professionnel’s Serie Expert Pro-Longer Cream that contains FILLER-A100 and amino acid ensures that your hair won’t look sticky or greasy after applying to your strands. Amino acids hydrate and absorb quickly, so your hair doesn’t look like it has anything in it at all.

When I do wash my quarantine hair, I use a shampoo formulated for dry hair, like the Kérastase Nutritive Bain Satin 2 Shampoo. I spend so much time indoors with my baseboard heaters that strip my hair of moisture, so even though I don’t use a lot of heat products, I still look for something targeted for dry hair. The Kérastase Nutritive Fondant Magistral Conditioner For Severely Dry Hair is my lifesaver. I can always tell the difference in how my hair feels post-shower if I use anything else. This conditioner is formulated with benzoin resin to calm the scalp and to form a protective layer on the hair to lock in moisture.

My Weekly Hair Care Routine

Once a week, I add extra moisture to my hair with the Kérastase Nutritive Masquintense Thick Hair Mask. Though it’s gentle enough to use each time you wash, I like to save it for showers when I’m not in a hurry and can leave it on for the five to 10 minutes it requires. I work a quarter-sized amount throughout my hair, starting mid-way and down to the ends. Then I pile up all my hair on the top of my head to let it soak through and work its magic.

My Monthly Hair Care Routine

Once a month, I get real with my conditioning treatment and take it outside of the confines of my shower. Sitting with a hair-strengthening mask, like L’Oréal Professionnel’s Inforcer Anti-Breakage Mask as you’re catching up on emails or watching a movie is one of the most effective ways to care for your hair. Why? Because you forget you’re doing it. I look for masks with vitamin B6 to stimulate growth and nourish my hair at the same time. Simply apply it to towel-dried hair, leave it on for a few minutes and then rinse off in the shower.

Getting on a regular wash schedule and learning what products work for my hair concerns has been a game-changer in leveling up my hair care routine. Remember, it doesn’t have to be complicated to get results. Just find a regular shampoo and conditioner set that suits your needs, and try moisturizing masks when you need an extra hydration boost.
