There’s a reason why braids are always in style: They’re extremely versatile, ultra-wearable, and offer endless creative possibilities—even for novice hairstylers. One plaited ‘do we’ve been particularly loving lately is the rope braid. Known for its interlocked, rope-like appearance, this braid is perfect for both casual and formal occasions and takes mere minutes to execute. Whether you're preparing for a special event or just want to add a touch of sophistication to your everyday look, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you master this simple style.
What Is a Rope Braid?
A rope braid is exactly what it sounds like—a plaited hairstyle that resembles the look of intertwined rope. It’s typically created by twisting two sections of hair in the same direction and then wrapping them around each other the opposite way for a rope-like appearance. Like many braided styles, we love the versatility a rope braid offers: Depending on how tightly or loosely you wind the sections, the final result can be sleek and polished or relaxed and voluminous.
How To Create a Rope Braid in X Easy Steps
Step 1: Prep your hair
Before you start braiding, you’ll want to brush or comb through your hair to remove any knots. Tangled hair can lead to an uneven braid, with lumps and bumps that disrupt your style’s final appearance. To help loosen stubborn knots, dampen the area with a leave-in conditioner like Mizani 25 Miracle Milk. This should help make detangling an easier and more gentle process.
It’s worth noting that if you have clean or fine hair, you may need to add some grip to your strands to keep them from slipping out of your fingers while you braid. We usually recommend working with unwashed hair, but when that’s not possible, consider roughing up your locks with a texturizing spray. We love the Kérastase V.I.P. Volume in Powder Texturizing Spray, which provides instant hair texture and offers strong hold without leaving behind any powdery residue. Another great option for adding grit to your hair is the Matrix Builder Wax Spray. The innovative formula combines the hold of a hairspray with the control and texture of a hair wax, adding body and medium hold to your style.
Step 2: Section your hair
For the most basic version of a rope braid, fasten your hair into a ponytail at your desired height. With your ponytail in place, divide the loose ends into two equal sections. If needed, tie the ends with elastics to keep them separated while you twist them in the next step.
Step 3: Start twisting
Take the first section of hair and twist it in one direction, as shown in the photo above. Use your fingers to twist the hair tightly but not so tight that it feels uncomfortable.
Now, take the second section and twist it in the same direction as the first. Being consistent with the direction of your twists is key for achieving that rope-like appearance.
Step 4: Combine the sections
Cross each section of hair over the other, working in the opposite direction from how you twisted the individual sections. This counter-directional wrapping creates the rope braid’s distinctive pattern.
Tip: Take care to apply consistent tension as you braid for the most polished results. When you get to the bottom of your braid, secure the ends of your hair with an elastic.
Step 5: Add your finishing touches
Flyaways can be enemy number one against achieving a refined rope braid. If you have layers or shorter pieces of hair sticking out from your braid, tame them with a bit of hair gel. Matrix Controller Gel is among our favorite formulas for adding structure, shine, and strong hold to updos.
Finish by spritzing your mane with a high-hold hairspray to help keep your interlocked style from unraveling. Try the L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.Art Extreme Lacquer Hairspray to provide shape memory that lasts up to 48 hours.
Tip: For a more undone finish, gently pancake your braid (a.k.a. lightly pull it apart) to loosen it up and add the illusion of volume and fullness.
