In an ideal world, our strands would be smooth, shiny, and frizz-free without any effort. The reality, however, is that we typically rely on hot tools to achieve those gorgeous, enviable hairstyles—and if you love heat styling your hair, you already know the damaging toll it can take on your mane.
Luckily, if you’re concerned about hair damage from heat styling, there are tools like L'Oréal Professionnel’s Steampod that offer the same styling benefits while being more gentle on your mane. Don’t believe us? We asked a pro to try the steam-powered flat iron for themselves.
Jess Gonsalves, L'Oréal Professionnel national artist, talks through the Steampod benefits you need to know about—and how she uses the innovative flat iron to smooth her unruly ringlets.
What is the L'Oréal Professionnel Steampod?
Before we get into Steampod benefits (and why it’s a must-have for your routine), let’s talk about what it is and how it works. The Steampod is a flat iron that uses patented steam technology and dual heating plates to straighten or wave any hair type two times smoother and two times faster* with long-lasting, high-shine results. The tool infuses water into the hair with each pass for gentler styling with 91 percent less breakage**.
The intelligent heat control ranges from 350 to 410 degrees Fahrenheit, making it suitable for all hair types and textures, whether you have fine hair or thick, unruly locks.

According to Gonsalves, the Steampod has revamped her styling routine completely. Not only is she able to smooth her curly hair with less damage, but she’s also able to maintain a long-lasting style without needing to touch it up.
“I generally have pretty curly hair, but I love to wear it straight or in a cute blowout, but if I over-style or overheat my hair, I end up with dry ends, split ends, and that’s not always cute,” Gonsalves says.
When she was sent the Steampod, however, she fell in love with it immediately. She tested it out for a few months without using any other hot tools to see what it could potentially do for her hair.
“It leaves my hair looking super healthy with a really shiny finish, and I have a lot less breakage than I've ever had before,” Golsavles says. “I feel like I can grow my hair longer, and when my clients use it, they’re not over-using a tool, so I know that when they’re going home with their fresh color, they’re not going to overheat their hair and change their color.”
Before Gonsalves uses the L'Oréal Professionnel Steampod, she lets her hair air dry. Then, she sections her hair into small segments and brushes it out before passing the iron through each section from root to tip.
“Keep the arrows on the plate facing down, and you can honestly get your hair nice and smooth in one motion,” Gonsalves explains. “You can keep the hair super straight or give it a blowout look. Because the cord moves with the tool, you can really rotate and get a different bend in your hair.”
When it comes to versatile, damage-free styling, Gonsavles gives the L'Oréal Professionnel Steampod her professional stamp of approval.
