Halloween season is finally here. After years of choosing from tons of fashionable and trendy looks, we’ve come to one conclusion—costumes inspired by our favorite celebrities are the absolute best. From Old Hollywood starlets to music and fashion icons, we’ve pulled Halloween hair inspiration from some of the biggest names in the business.
This year, Redken brand ambassador and artist Sean Godard created a stunning pop princess hairstyle inspired by one of the most iconic pop stars of the early 2000s known best for her “dirty” era. Intrigued? Keep reading for a step by step guide on how to achieve the look for yourself. Whether you have dark brown hair or dirty blonde, this 2000s Halloween costume hair will look stunning on you.
What you’ll need. The crimped waves and pops of color are what makes this hairstyle stand out. Don’t worry—you won’t have to color your hair any crazy hue to pull this look off. Instead, Godard suggests using black and purple clip-in extensions. To complete this look you’ll need two black and six purple clip-in extensions.
You’ll also need a hair crimper, a hair clip, a fine-toothed comb, a large paddle brush, and a few staple Redken products.
Prep the hair.
Brush through your strands with a large paddle brush to remove any tangles before you begin styling. You’ll also want to remove any snarls from your extensions gently. Then, part your hair horizontally into two even segments and section off the top half with a clip. For this look, Godard braided the bottom section of hair before installing the extensions. This step helps keep the extensions in place and prevents hair breakage caused by the clip-ins pulling on your strands.
Install your extensions.
Take one of the black extensions and clip it onto the bottom of the braided section of hair. Take the second black clip-in extension and install it slightly above the first. Once the extensions are set, release the top layer of hair from the clip.Next, separate a small segment of hair from the top of your head starting at your ears as if you were styling a half ponytail. Use a clip to keep that section of hair out of the way for the next step. Starting at the right side of your head, use your fine-toothed comb to tease a 2-inch section of hair lightly. Spray a light spritz of Redken Control Addict 28 High-Hold Hairspray at the roots of the section before installing a purple clip-in extension. Continue teasing 2-inch sections of hair as you install the rest of the purple extensions throughout the hair. Remove the clip that’s holding the top section of your hair once all of the extensions are set.
Create volume.Separate a new section of hair at the top of your head at the crown. Backcomb the entire segment using your fine-toothed comb to create volume. After you finish backcombing, gently brush all of the hair in the section towards the back of your head to form a poof. Secure the poof with bobby pins and apply a few more spritzes of the Control Addict 28 High-Hold Hairspray.
Crimp away. For this look, you don’t need to worry about precisely crimping your entire mane. Switch it up between fully crimped strands and a few crimped accent pieces. You should always use a heat protectant when heat styling your hair. We recommend applying the Redken Iron Shape 11 throughout your hair before you begin.
After you finish crimping your hair, apply a light spritz of Redken Shine Flash 02 to complete the look.
Add finishing touches.Once your hairstyle is perfected, choosing the right outfit and accessories to pair with it is a must. Grab your best sparkly top, the biggest statement jewelry you own and top it all off with a dramatic, smokey eye look.
