Chrissy Metz Slayed A Modern Bouffant On The Red Carpet

chrissy metz golden globes 2019

On Sunday, January 6, the 2019 award show season officially kicked off. TV and movie stars flocked to Los Angeles and hit the red carpet decked out in designer threads, expensive jewelry, and flawless hairstyles. From dark brown hair to periwinkle strands, celebrities debuted many iconic red carpet looks. One of our absolute favorite hairstyles of the night was TV actress Chrissy Metz, who wore a modern bouffant.

The actress may not have been nominated for an award, but that didn’t stop her from wearing an award-winning ‘do. After helping design her own stunning red carpet gown, Metz tapped Mark Mena, Matrix artist and celebrity stylist, to create a red carpet-worthy hairstyle to match. Mena was the perfect person to create this 2019 take on a 1950s classic as he and Metz have worked together for over a year now.

“Chrissy wanted a 70’s inspired look, but we also wanted to put a modern twist on it," Mena says. "The inspiration came from the big hair that was shown on the SS19 runways, but polished for a red carpet moment.”

Unlike the bouffants of yesteryear, this style is anything but stiff. Mena’s take on a bouffant combines soft curls with minimalist structure for a final look that looks just as good on the red carpet as it does on a first date.

For this look, we recommend starting with freshly washed and dried hair. Because you’ll need volume without stiffness, we recommend washing and conditioning your hair with a volumizing system like the Matrix Total Results High Amplify Shampoo and Conditioner. Once your hair is washed, apply Matrix Style Link Volume Builder Mousse from your roots to your ends. Then, mix Matrix Style Link Blowout Big Queen Volumizing Blowout Cream and Matrix Style Link Volume Builder Mousse together and apply it from the mid-lengths to ends and blow out your hair in 1-inch sections using a medium size ceramic brush. Then, start at the back of your head and wrap 2-inch sections of hair around a 2-inch curling iron to create oversize barrel curls, set your hair in pin curls and spray Matrix Style Link Volume Fixer Hairspray throughout your hair.

After you've let your hair set for 30 minutes, gently rake your fingers or a wide tooth comb through your hair to loosen the curls into loose waves. Then, section off the hair at your crown and flip it over so it hangs in front of your face. Lightly spray the sectioned off hair with a strong hold hairspray like the Matrix Style Link Volume Fixer Volume Hairspray and gently backcomb your locks to create volume at your roots. Once you’ve backcombed the entire section of hair, flip it back over and gently comb the top so it looks smooth.

Gather the backcombed section of hair at the back of your head and secure the section with several bobby pins. If you want to make your style even more festive, swap out your bobby pins for bedazzled hairpins or top off your style with an embellished brooch. For a final touch, set your look with a the Matrix Style Link Style Fixer Finishing Spray.
