After months of cold, rainy weather, summer is finally here and we could not be more excited. While we’re sure you can’t wait to fill your calendars with days lounging at the beach, summertime isn’t always all fun and sunshine. From frizzy strands to faded color, the warm weather can really do a number on your precious locks.
If the thought of frizzy strands makes you want to cancel all of your summer plans, fear not. We’ve rounded up the best summer hacks from our favorite brand ambassadors and stylists. Follow their simple rules and your hair will look flawless all summer long.
Get Foolproof Beach Waves Every Time
It may be summertime, but chances are good you don’t have the luxury of relaxing at the beach every day—but that doesn’t mean your hair shouldn’t have any fun. You may not be able to hit the beach as often as you’d like but if you follow L’oréal Professional’s brand ambassador and stylist Jeremy Taylor’s simple steps, you’ll have flawless beach waves whenever your heart desires.
To begin, prep your strands with a primer like L'Oréal Professionnel’s Densité primer spray from the Tecni.Art collection. Then, create alternating waves using a flat or curling iron.
For a finishing touch, use the Wild Stylers Next Day Hair dry finishing spray to give the hair an imperfect next-day look.
Update Your Color With Low Maintenance Shadow Roots
Unless you live in a perpetually warm state, summer is the three months out of the year where the weather is absolutely perfect. As much as you love your hair colorist, you want to spend your free time soaking up the sun—not sitting in the salon. If you have a high maintenance color like hot pink, Ryan Pearl, Redken brand ambassador and stylist, suggests asking your colorist to add shadow roots for a grunge look.
“We go a little deeper at the root and sheer at the ends. [Shadow root] is the way it’s going,” Pearl explains, adding that he sees hair color in general swinging toward an effortless look.
Shadowy roots don’t just add dimension to your color and create the illusion of a thicker mane. They also make it easy to grow hair out longer between appointments. Instead of a clear line of demarcation, you’ll be left with an organic-looking fade into pink.
Protect Your Strands From The Beach And Pool
If your weekend plans include back to back trips to the beach and pool, this tip is for you. Mattison Perron, Kérastase brand ambassador and artist, warns against the dangers of chlorine and salt water on hair.
“Salt water can also be drying on the hair, long after leaving the beach,” she continues. “Salt and water create a saline solution that coats the hair and can leave [it] feeling rough even after shampooing.”
Luckily, protecting your strands from the harsh waters is easier than it seems. Perron recommends rinsing your strands with fresh water before heading to the beach or pool. By rinsing your hair with fresh water before jumping in pool or salt water, your hair will absorb more of the fresh water. After rinsing your hair with fresh water, saturate your locks with a leave-in conditioner for an extra layer of protection.
Swap Out Your Salt Spray For A Sugar Spray
For the last decade, salt spray has been everyone’s go-to product to create lived-in beach waves. While sea salt spray does an amazing job at creating texture, it can sometimes be very drying. Dry hair is the last thing you want in the summer time, considering it’s is one of the main culprits of frizz. Fortunately, there’s a sea salt spray alternative that gives your hair all of the texture without any of the dryness: sugar spray.
The Pureology Style & Protect Beach Waves Sugar Spray is formulated with two kinds of sugar, xylose sugar and cane sugar. Cane sugar acts as the sea salt in the spray and helps to create the “beachy” texture—without any of the drying properties of salt.
Sugar spray doesn’t just create moisturized beachy waves, Pureology Style & Protect Beach Waves Sugar Spray also does double duty to provide some much-needed protection for your strands. Xylose sugar creates a crystalline barrier around the hair to protect it from heat up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. The barrier offers heat protection both when styling wet or dry hair.
Moisturize To Battle Frizz
Humidity usually gets the blame for causing frizzy hair, but ultimately it comes down to one thing: your hair is lacking moisture. Frizz happens when your locks are dehydrated and they begin to seek moisture from their surrounding environment. This is why frizz is usually most noticeable when it’s humid outside. Your dry locks do their best to soak up the moisture from the air, causing your strands to swell with temporary moisture and appear frizzy. If you keep your strands moisturized, chances are good you’re less likely to deal with frizz.
