It may feel like the year just started but February is fast approaching, which means it’s time to get your Valentine’s day plans in order. Even though Valentine’s day it thought of as the day of love, you don’t need to be in a relationship to celebrate. Because—let’s be honest—there’s no love as real as the love between you and your best friends.

If you’re skipping a candlelit dinner for two for a fun Galentines day with your besties, we have the perfect hairstyle for you. Whether you have dark brown hair or ash blonde locks, this half-up fishtail crown braid is romantic enough to compliment the Valentine’s day decor but fun enough for a girls night out with your best friends. We teamed up with Pureology artist Jamie Wiley to show you exactly how to pull off this flawless style.

This look is best achieved on day two or three hair that has a little bit a texture from the day before. If you just washed your mane but are looking to add a bit of texture to your style, we suggest applying Pureology’s Style + Protect Wind Tossed Texture Finishing Spray from your mid-lengths to your ends. The invisible, dry formula holds textured styles with a soft, touchable feel.

To begin, part your hair down the middle from your hairline to the crown of your head. Working with one side at a time, grab a triangular section of hair and separate it into two sections. Be sure to leave a few face-framing strands loose to give your style a perfectly undone final look.

To create your fishtail braid, take a small segment of hair from the outside of the right section of hair and cross it over to the right section of hair. Then, take a small segment from the outside of the left section of hair and crossing it over to the right. Continue crisscrossing the hair until you have about one inch of loose hair. Secure the braid with a clear hair elastic.

Take a dime-sized amount of Pureology’s Style +Protect Mess It Up Texture Paste and emulsify it in your palms before using your fingers to pancake your braid for a voluminous effect. Repeat the same steps on the opposite side of your head to create a second fishtail braid.

Once both braids are complete, you can begin to craft your half-up style. Bring both fishtail braids to the back of your head and cross-cross them to create a crown effect. Then, use several bobby pins to secure the braids to the back of your head. Use your fingers to gently tease the hair at the crown of your head for a voluminous and undone final look. Then, set your look in place with Pureology’s Style + Protect Lock It Down Hairspray.
