Halloween is just around the corner, which means it’s crunch time for finalizing your costume! With just a few days left before the spooky holiday hits, you might still be pulling together last-minute details to make sure your Halloween look is perfect. If you already have your outfit and accessories on lock, all that’s left to do is find the perfect hairstyle to take your costume to the next level—that’s where wigs come in.
Whether your costume requires a grey balayage or voluminous curls, a wig is often essential to bring your entire Halloween look together without needing to make a permanent hair change. Unfortunately, wigs that aren’t designed to last more than a few Halloweens sometimes require a lot of maintenance and care to look good.
Running short on time and looking for a few tricks to spruce up your wig before your big Halloween party? We’ve got you covered. We tapped Stephanie Nolan, CEO of XOXO Virgin Hair, who demonstrates a few expert tips for making your Halloween wig look stunning.
Shake it out.
Have you recently picked up a wig from the Halloween store? If you have, you may notice that it’s a little misshapen when you slide it out of the bag. To remedy this, Nolan suggests gently shaking the wig to reform the shape and give it some volume.
Resize your wig.
If you try on your Halloween wig and notice it’s a bit snug on your head, don’t panic! Nolan demonstrates a quick and easy way of making your wig fit better. Before you begin, gather a pair of scissors, a needle and thread, and a 1-inch elastic band. Cut a 1-inch slit into the wig band. Then, cut a 1-inch piece off of your elastic band. Place the piece of elastic in the space you made in the perimeter of the wig band. Sew in each side of the elastic to keep it in place. Once you’ve completed these steps, you’ll notice the width of the wig is larger.
Fluff your curls.
When it comes to Halloween costumes, the bigger the curls, the better! If you’re working with a cheaper wig, there’s a strong chance your curls are going to need some TLC before you wear it. Luckily, Nolan knows a way to fluff up the lackluster ringlets in no time. The best part? You’ll only need a wide-tooth hair pick to complete this step.Simply place the wig on your head and make sure it’s secured. Then, use your hair pick to gently pull on the curls and fluff them out.
Now that you’re equipped with all there is to know about keeping your Halloween wig in the best possible shape, you’re finally ready to slay in your costume!
