As someone with wavy, dry, and color-treated hair who barely goes a day without hot tools, it’s hard to find a hair product that does it all. Every time I hop out of the shower, I find myself mixing up a different cocktail of heat protectant, leave-in-conditioner, and toner, hoping to finally pare down my routine. Despite my best intentions, this often backfires; layering on products from too many different brands often results in the formulas clashing, making my locks feel heavy and weighed down.
I was practically counting the days until the Matrix All-In-One Toning Leave-In Sprays hit Hair.com because the formulas ticked every box that my high-maintenance hair demands. Brightening? Check. Frizz control? Yep. Shine enhancement? You bet! When I finally got my hands on them, I used them for three shampoos in a row over a week and a half. Read on to learn more about the toning sprays and whether or not I’ll be giving up my mad scientist-style hair care routine. (Spoiler alert: I am).
What are Matrix All-In-One Toning Leave-In Sprays?
Matrix’s new All-In-One Toning Leave-In Sprays are buildable toners that sit on the surface of the hair, helping neutralize brassy tones in colored hair.
You may be wondering why they’re called All-In-One sprays, and that’s because the formulas do so much more than just tone strands. They’re also infused with conditioning ingredients and boast ten beautifying benefits, which include:
- Buildable toning of brassy and orange tones
- Smoothing cuticles and boosting shine
- Reducing frizz
- Detangling
- Adding moisture
- Improving the appearance of split ends
- Preventing breakage from brushing
- Helping with hair manageability
- Priming hair for styling
- Suitable for color-treated hair
Additionally, toning lasts through the next shampoo and won’t stain or transfer.
Who are Matrix All-In-One Toning Leave-In Sprays good for?
Whether you’re a highlighted brunette or a bottled blonde, the sprays are suitable for anyone who lightens their hair. They’re also effective at removing strand-dulling pigment from natural or colored silver and gray hair.
It’s important to note that toners can only enhance or brighten your current level of color, so if you desire to make your hair hue lighter, then a consultation with your colorist may be in order!
How do you use Matrix All-In-One Toning Leave-In Sprays?
The best way to incorporate these toning sprays into your routine is by using them as a styling aid on damp hair. They can either be used as often as you’d like or just when hair is leaning a bit brassy, which typically happens every third to fourth shampoo.
The unique thing about the formulas is that they are buildable, so you can keep applying them until you achieve your desired result. The pros recommend using the sprays on damp hair first, allowing hair to dry, then spritzing on another coat of the formula as needed. Just let each coating dry before misting on an additional one.
There are two toning sprays in the new launch you should know about:
Matrix Brass Off All-In-One Toning Leave-In Spray
The Brass Off All-In-One Toning Leave-In Spray uses blue dye color-depositing technology to neutralize brassy and orange tones that plague lightened brunettes and dark blonde hair.
Matrix So Silver All-In-One Toning Leave-In Spray
The minute unwanted yellow begins to creep into your beautiful blonde, silver, or gray hair, you’ll be reaching for the So Silver All-In-One Toning Leave-In Spray, which utilizes violet dye color-depositing technology to negate the dull tones.

How I Use the Matrix All-In-One Toning Leave-In Sprays In My Routine
Since I have dark brown hair that has been lightened with a blonde balayage, I opted to use the Brass Off Toning Spray. After washing my hair, I sprayed a generous amount of Brass all over my damp hair, then a little extra for good measure (mainly because it smelled so good). I washed my hair relatively late this night, then immediately went to lay down on my white pillowcase before letting it dry. After a few minutes of mindless social media scrolling, I bolted upright in my bed, worrying that my new blue-tinted toner had certainly stained my pillow. I was pleasantly surprised that my sheets still looked as fresh as they did when I slipped them on that same morning, so I can confidently say the spray lived up to its stain-resistant claims!
I am fully aware that going to sleep with wet hair isn’t the best idea, and I usually avoid it because it makes my wavy hair a bird’s nest the next day. However, I have to admit that my strands looked shiny and well-defined the next day, which shocked me.

I know I mentioned that I am a heat-styling fanatic, but for my second time using the Brass Off Toning Spray, I decided to rock my natural pattern for a few days. This is when I really saw the brightening start to kick in. I applied the spray to my wet hair, let it dry, and then gave an additional mist once my waves settled into their natural pattern. My strands were basically frizz-free (no easy feat in the June humidity) and had a natural sheen to them that I usually have to work harder at achieving.

On this day, I decided to give So Silver a whirl because I do have a lot of blonde in my hair, especially in the layers beneath. I think the bright blonde and the bounce of my heat-styled curls in the above photo speak for themselves. Also not pictured: How incredibly smooth and soft my hair feels. No matter which spray I used, my hair dried significantly faster than it would without the formula. For someone as impatient as I am, that’s a significant upside in my book. With such great, crystal-clear results, I can confidently say that the Matrix All-In-One Toning Leave-In Sprays are exactly what I have been looking for.
