If we came across a magical lamp one day and were allowed to ask a genie for three wishes, one of them would definitely be to have a celebrity hair colorist on hand at all times. Colorists can take your hair color from dull and boring to vibrant and multidimensional in a matter of hours—and who doesn’t want someone like that on their team?
While we’ve had no luck finding a magical lamp, we have the next best thing—one-on-one time with one of the best colorists in the industry, Matt Rez, Redken ambassador, celebrity stylist, and creator of the stunning Midlight technique. Rez gave us the inside scoop on all of the hair care products he and his famous clients can’t live without. Armed with these celebrity colorist-approved products, you can be sure your hair color will look red carpet-level flawless every day.
Matt Rez’s All-Time Favorite Hair Products
Redken Color Extend Magnetics Shampoo and Conditioner
Shampoo and conditioner are the foundation of any hair care routine. If you’ve recently colored your hair, the wrong shampoo and conditioner can ruin your new hue. Rez recommends all of his clients pick up the Redken Color Extend Magnetics Shampoo and Conditioner system.
“It's good for colored hair. It doesn't strip your color, it adds moisture back in, and it's very lightweight, so it doesn't build up on the hair,” the colorist says.
Redken Extreme Play Safe 3-In-1 Leave-In Treatment
As a colorist, Rez doesn’t do a lot of styling, but when he does, he can’t work without Redken’s Extreme Play Safe 3-in-1 Leave-In Treatment.
“It's actually a treatment while you're using it to protect from further damage, which has never been done. Most heat protectants kind of coat the hair and burn off with the heat, but they don't truly penetrate and actually treat the hair,” Rez explains. “Put it on damp hair, blow dry it in. Use any kind of like curling irons and whatnot and up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, it's good.”
Redken Extreme Play Safe 3-In-1 Leave-In Treatment, $24.00 MSRP
Redken Frizz Dismiss Shampoo and Conditioner
Your hair products should address as many of your mane’s needs as possible. If you have curly, color-treated hair, Rez recommends the Redken Frizz Dismiss Shampoo and Conditioner system.
“Frizz Dismiss is really good for curly hair or people that have super frizzy, wavy hair,” he says. “I really like the way it forms a curl.”
Redken Color Extend Blondage Shampoo and Conditioner
Bottle blondes require specific hair care, and no one knows that better than Rez. That’s why he suggests his blonde clients pick up Redken Color Extend Blondage Shampoo and Conditioner.
“It's not so highly pigmented that it makes the color look dingy. It's just enough for maintenance,” Rez says.
Redken Color Extend Blondage Express Anti-Brass Mask
Shampoo and conditioner are just half the battle if you really want to keep your bleached strands in tip-top shape. Add Rez’s favorite hair mask for blondes into your weekly hair care routine to keep brass at bay.
“It smells amazing, and it melts in the hair so well that you won't get like patchy results,” he explains. “It's really, really pretty actually. Five minutes a week does wonders.”
Redken Color Extend Blondage Express Anti-Brass Mask, $29.00 MSRP
Redken Extreme Strengthening Mega Mask
In Rez's dream world, no client would ever leave a salon with damaged hair. If it were to happen, however, he'd recommend Redken Extreme Strengthening Mega Mask. Not sure if your hair is actually damaged or just dry? Rez explains how to tell the difference.
“People should know the difference between damaged and dry hair. Damaged hair is when it's breaking. Dry hair is just dry.
Redken Extreme Strengthening Mega Mask, $29.00 MSRP
