As a woman with textured hair who loves to slay a vibrant hair color, I know the struggle of trying to find a colorist who is properly equipped to color and maintain the health of my precious ringlets all too well. I can’t even begin to count the number of times over the last 15 years I’ve been told, my hair color dreams were just unattainable. But, it’s 2020, and it’s about time the hair industry caught up with the needs of all textures. It turns out; I’m not the only one who thinks it’s time for a major change.
Redken and Mizani, two of the leading professional hair care brands in the industry, have teamed up for an extraordinary partnership that is bound to change the way we color and care for textured hair. Redken, a leader in professional color, and Mizani, a leader in professional textured hair care and styling, are bringing together their specific skill sets to achieve a common goal: To give salon professionals the tools they need to expand their skillsets and in turn, confidently color, care, and style textured hair.
As people with textured hair rely less and less on chemical services to alter their texture, they’ve begun to play around in the world of hair color. Which in turn, has created a greater need to educate stylists on how to color and lighten textured hair without compromising the curl pattern or hair health and how to replenish the hair with the right balance of protein and moisture via care and styling.
By joining forces and merging Redken’s expertise in color and Mizani’s expertise in textured haircare and styling, the brands will empower stylists through inclusive education and superior product offerings and as a result, give clients unlimited options to play with color with help from the right care and styling products.
As a part of the partnership, Redken and Mizani will be welcoming top texture experts Leysa Carrillo and Rachel Redd to the Redken and Mizani family as joint Redken x Mizani brand ambassadors. Leysa and Rachel will be working alongside Mizani global artistic director Pekela Riley and key members of the Redken and Mizani artist network including, Redken artists George Garcia and Lindsey Olsen and Mizani artists Evie Johnson and Jamal Edmonds, to name a few.
Carillo and Redd are so excited to join the Redken x Mizani team and usher in this new era where texture meets color.
“I remember walking into five different salons and hearing over and over that no one could do my hair. At that moment, I felt left out and insecure, when all I wanted was to feel beautiful,” Carillo explains. “Flash forward to today, my goal is to educate stylists on how to work with textured hair so all clients can feel beautiful. I always say, I don’t do magic—I do the right hair, for the right people, with the right products—and I am honored to continue my journey with Redken and Mizani.”
“When I started off in the industry, I was the only person in the room who looked like me,” Redd remembers. “Determined to be the unexpected by being myself, I worked as a full-time color assistant in New York City, with the goal of mastering hair color and applying all I learned on textured hair. For me, this partnership is all about inclusivity and making a positive impact on the professional hair industry.”
Alongside these experts, Redken and Mizani will be reaching stylists with inclusive education through The Redken Exchange, partner salons, SalonCentric stores and at top professional trade shows.
