Best Of Brunette: Our 2022 Hair Color Predictions

Wondering what’s ahead for brunette hair color trends in the new year? We’re predicting these eight hues will be everywhere in 2022.

While classic brunette shades have a reputation for being boring, we’re starting to see a shift into brunette obsession (and we’re not mad about it)!. As a salon blonde for the past 10 years, I can’t deny that brunettes are taking the throne for most sought-after hair color. If you, like the rest of the hair world, are going wild for brunette, you’ve come to the right place!

We’re making our predictions on which brunette hair color trends to look out for in 2020. Whether you’re looking for a chocolatey hue or something on the ashier side, these eight shades will be everywhere in the new year.

The Best Brunette Hair Color Trends For 2020

Who doesn’t love their hair color to match their favorite coffee flavor? While beverage-inspired hair colors are nothing new, all bets are on hazelnut to be the go-to in 2020. Not to mention: This rich, dimensional hue looks stunning on all skin tones.

Dirty Brunette

Dirty brunette caught our eye in 2018—and the trend hasn’t left the spotlight since. If you have yet to try this classic brunette shade with warm blonde highlights, we predict the trend will still be going strong come 2020.

If you decide to lighten your brown hair, you can expect to experience some brassiness. That’s why we recommend adding a blue shampoo and conditioner system like Redken Color Extend Brownlights Shampoo and Conditioner to your routine. This progressive toning system is ideal for preventing and neutralizing brass on both highlighted and naturally brown hair.

Dark Chocolate Brown

While we’re always craving sweets, in 2020, we’re going a little deeper with our chocolate obsession. If you’re looking for a dark brown shade that’s rich and reflective, look no further than dark chocolate brown.

Glossy Espresso

Speaking of brunette shades with tons of shine, no color is quite as head-turning as espresso. If you want your espresso hue to have a mirror-like finish, ask your colorist to complete your appointment with a hair gloss treatment. If you’re looking to achieve a similar result at home, use a hair serum like Pureology Hydrate Shine Max Hair Serum. This product smooths flyaways and adds vibrant shine while keeping color radiant.

Reddish Brown

If we had to choose one red hair color that’s going to rule 2020, it’s copper. If you’re looking to take advantage of the fiery ginger trend—without completely abandoning your brunette roots—ask your colorist for reddish brown.

Plum Brown

Looking to ease into vibrant hair colors? Purple hair is going to be everywhere in 2020, so start slow by adding notes of plum to your dark brown base.

Golden Brown

If you’re looking for a way to add brightness to your look in the new year without going into full-on blonde territory, consider golden brown.

Silver Ash Brown

If you’re into a shade that’s a bit moodier, you’ll want to skip warm tones and go the ashy route in the new year. Silver ash brown, however, is nothing like your typical ashy brunette hue. To achieve silver ash brown, your stylist will incorporate notes of metallic silver throughout an ash brown shade like mushroom brown for a look that’s seriously on-trend.
