April is here, which means it’s official earth month! While we typically suggest spending as much time outdoors enjoying all that mother nature has to offer, this month, we’re going to have to appreciate the earth from indoors. Spending time indoors doesn’t mean you can’t find ways to make your life a little more eco-friendly, however. If you’re looking to give your hair care routine a green makeover, we’ve got you covered. Below we’ve curated some of our favorite eco-friendly hair care tips—the best part? They’re super easy to incorporate into your routine!

1. Use less electricity.
One of the easiest ways to green your hair care routine is to give your hot tools a break. While your 30-minute blow dry sessions may not feel like they suck up a lot of electricity, when you style your hair every day, it really starts to add up. Not only will giving your hot tools a break save power, but it will also give your strands some much-needed reprieve from heat styling.
We love a bouncy blowout and pin-straight strands as much as the next girl, but constant heat styling can start to take a toll on the look and feel of your strands—especially if you have textured hair. Take this month to really embrace your natural texture and rely on air dry products to help style your mane to perfection.
2. Use less water.
When thinking about ways to help the earth, limiting excessive water usage is always near the top of the list. While now is not the time to cut back on showering and washing your hands, it may be a good time to cut back on wash days. If you’re worried not maintaining your usual wash schedule will leave your mane looking greasy, limp, and frankly smelling not so fresh, invest in a dry shampoo formula. Looking for some suggestions? Below are some of our favorites from the L’Oréal portfolio of products.
Redken Deep Clean Dry Shampoo
The product is formulated with rice and tapioca starches to provide maximum oil absorption on all hair types and provides a cooling sensation for a deep clean feel.

Kérastase Fresh Affair Dry Shampoo
Infused with vitamin E, the formula helps to nourish the hair and scalp, this dry shampoo features an ultra-lightweight formula that absorbs excess oil and refreshes strands, leaving them with a fresh, airy touch. Our favorite part? The neroli based fragrance features notes of citrus essence, florals, such as lavender and bitter orange, and base notes of white musk and jasmine petal.

3. Minimize product usage.
As self-proclaimed product junkies we know this one may seem nearly impossible, but it’s actually much easier than it sounds—as long as you have the right products. As much as we love having a product for each and every one of our product woes, you can achieve the same results with a multi-use product that will tackle all of your hair woes at once. And fewer products = less waste. Not sure which all-in-one product is perfect for you? Check out some of our favorites from the L’Oréal portfolio of products.

4. Support eco-friendly brands and products.
Minimizing your product usage is a great way to green your routine, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop shopping for new products altogether. Banish shoppers guilt by loading up your cart with products from brands like Biolage that are committed to sustainability. Not only is Biolage good for your strands, but it’s also good for the planet! The brand has had a commitment to sustainability since day one, with a focus on minimizing its environmental impact with the use of recyclable plastic in its packaging and helping salons implement more sustainable practices.
5. Use reusable bags.
We can’t wait to go shopping again, and when we do, we’re making sure to bring our own shopping bags with us. Whether your state is one of the many that recently banned single-use plastic bags or you have a roomy tote you’ve been waiting to fill up, shopping with reusable bags is an easy and stylish way to green your hair care routine. Don’t have an Insta-worthy reusable shopping bag? Keep an eye out, we’re releasing our own adorable Hair.com reusable shopping bag later this month!
6. Recycle your products.
This tip seems like a no-brainer, and yet so many of us forget to do it! Don't let your empties go to waste. Recycle eligible containers and packaging. Not sure if you can recycle your shampoo bottle? Check the bottom of the bottle or the label. If you see the universal recycling symbol (a triangle of arrows), the container is safe to recycle.
Other brands have cut the middle man out completely, allowing you to refill your bottles at the salon, so you never have to toss a shampoo bottle ever again. Interested in giving a more sustainable formula a try? Try the L’Oréal Professionnel Source Essentielle Vegan Daily Shampoo or Source Essentielle Vegan Nourishing Shampoo, and when salons open back up head to your local L’Oréal Professionnel salon for a refill.
If you follow these simple tips and you can feel confident your hair care routine is good for your hair and the planet.
