On Monday, May 7th, the world’s most iconic celebrities and fashion icons swept through New York City. The “heavenly bodies”-themed extravaganza featured stars in stunning religion-inspired attire from stained glass dresses to looks inspired by famous medieval artwork.
Though many celebs had our jaws dropping throughout the night with some of the most daring looks ever seen on the red carpet, our eyes were on actress Emma Stone’s simple take on this year’s theme.
An icon of effortless yet trendy fashion, Stone is a regular on best-dressed lists and a standout at some of the most iconic red carpet events. She stunned at the gala with a low-cut plunging navy dress with gold accents paired with a loose side swept ponytail created by celebrity stylist Mara Roszak. The side swept ‘do was a surprising choice for Stone, whose red carpet looks are often inspired by Old Hollywood glam.
After sporting her natural blonde for a few years, Stone returned to her signature fiery red mane with the help of Tracey Cunningham, Redken brand ambassador and celebrity colorist. Best known for her iconic blonde hues, Cunningham stepped out of her normal routine to create Stone’s red using the Redken Shades EQ line.
Looking to try Stone’s Met Gala look for yourself? Read on for a step-by-step guide.
Begin with clean damp hair and apply a styling mousse like Redken Full Frame 07 All-Over Volumizing Mousse from root to end. To ensure that your strands are snarl-free and that the product is evenly distributed, brush through with the WetBrush Original Detangler. Blow dry your hair with the Bio Ionic 10X Dryer and use a round brush to smooth and tame flyaways. Once the hair is totally dry, use medium-sized velcro rollers to set it and add a generous amount of Redken Triple Take 32 Hairspray.
After a few minutes, remove the rollers from your hair. Curling away from your head, use the Bio Ionic 10X Iron to curl 1-inch sections. Once the hair cools, apply another layer of hairspray for additional hold. Run your fingers through your strands to break up the curls.
To complete the style, loosely gather your locks to one side of your head. Wrap a small, thin piece of beading wire into the ends of your hair while leaving about 3 inches out to create a low, tousled side pony. For extra shine, use a few spritzes of Redken Shine Flash 02 Spray on your crown and throughout your lengths. To ensure your look stays put all night long, top it off with a final layer of hairspray.
Now that you have the style down, all you’ll need to go full-on Emma Stone is the iconic red locks. Luckily, if you’re interested in changing up your color, Cunningham shared the exact formula she used to create the shade.
