It’s safe to say that at one point in every woman’s life, she’s contemplated getting bangs. They’re stylish, chic, and have the ability to instantly make you look put together. When you finally take the plunge and get bangs, you’re instantly obsessed. They’re everything you’ve ever dreamed of and more—that is, until you realize just how high maintenance they are.
Unfortunately, getting rid of bangs is nowhere near as easy as getting them. Lucky for you, Lauren Sill, Kérastase brand ambassador and stylist, is equipped with all kinds of tips that will make growing out your bangs a breeze. Whether you have a medium length hairstyle or an androgynous haircut, you’re going to love these tips.
How long does it take for bangs to grow out?
When you’re dealing with bangs that have reached an awkward length, you’ll do or buy anything to make your hair to grow faster. There’s no real way to speed up your hair growth process, but we can give you some insight as to just how long it’ll take for your bangs to grow out. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, hair grows an average an half an inch a month.
If your fringe typically reaches eyebrow length, Sill says you’ll be growing out your bangs for the better part of a year.
“If you want them to reach your chin, that’s probably about 4 inches for most people, so about eight months,” she explains.
How can a professional hairstylist help you grow out your bangs?
Eight months is a long time to be stuck with a hairstyle that you don't love. While you can’t speed the process along, Sill has a few clever ways to hide your awkward length.
If you’re trying to grow out blunt bangs, Sill suggests heading back to your salon and asking your stylist so soften up your blunt fringe with some texture.
“I make sure to subtly texture [bangs] so they grow out softer,” she explains. “I generally angle them a little more, so that they are shorter near the face—so they don’t grow out like a chunky layer.”
If you’re so fed up with your awkward fringe that you’re ready for an entirely new look, Sill recommends asking your stylist for layers.
While stylists usually recommend maintaining your usual trimming schedule while growing out your hair, Sill doesn’t advise trimming your bangs unless absolutely necessary.
“Only trim them if they need a reshape or if the ends are feeling dry. I skip them entirely if they are sitting cute and aren’t too dry, or I’ll just barely dust them,” she explains. “Make sure your stylist realizes how serious you are about growing them, so they don’t take too much off.”
