  • “I foresee lots of shag and wolf haircuts for curly and wavy textures,” says Michelle O’Connor, Matrix Global Artistic Director.
  • Butterfly haircuts are on the rise! But Biolage Ambassador and celebrity stylist Sunnie Brook who coined the haircut says that many people aren’t executing the look correctly. “It’s a very layered haircut that falls below the shoulders and is cut in a way that the top layer can be separated from the bottom and easily pinned under to look like a short haircut. The shortest top layer falls about two to three inches below your chin,” she explains.
  • Biolage Curl Specialist and celebrity stylist Cynthia Alvarez says that the viral octopus cut isn’t going anywhere. “[An octopus haircut] is the shape your hair becomes as it grows out the mullets and shag haircuts we got during the spring and summer,” she notes. “It’s textured and chic if you style it correctly!” Get the look with our most popular texturizers below.

  • No surprise here—reds are still reigning! “Red hair will be celebrated going into the winter. Red coppers, wines, and violets,” says O’Connor.
  • The perfect follow-up shade for fading redheads is a strawberry-inspired hue. “Expect some pale strawberry coppers,” says George Papanikolas, Matrix Celebrity Colorist and Brand Ambassador. “This color is easy to do over blonde hair or existing red tones. If you already have blonde hair all you have to do is lift the base and highlight first. The best way to define the tone is having a pale, almost blonde base color with copper undertones.”
  • Temporary hair color products like color-depositing conditioners and in-salon hair gloss like Redken Shades EQ make it easy to experiment without commitment.

  • Simple, low-maintenance hair hacks and hairstyles went viral throughout 2022—and the trend will be even bigger in 2023.
  • Elevate your styling routine with everyday hacks that will get you that effortless look. Matrix Brand Ambassador Greg Gilmore gives us this one: “Even looser curls—almost a wave around the face and more straight hair from that point down.”
  • When it comes to color, even the technique you use will be essential to nailing the undone trend. “[Ribbon lights] are a technique that adds a lot of dimension to waves or curls,” says Brook, suggesting the technique is one to try if you want ‘undone’ hair. “Highlights are applied to naturally air-dried hair. So stylists can see the best placement. The highlight color is one to two levels lighter than the all-over base color to give the hair reflective qualities without being stripe-y.”

  • Skipping heat styling in favor of no-heat hairstyles like buns, ponytails, textured waves, and natural curls. “I absolutely encourage all of my curly girls to embrace their natural curls, but not all curls and hair types are created equal,” says Bradley Leake, Hair.com Ambassador, and celebrity stylist. “Using your fingers to help define your curl pattern and cut down on heat damage is the best way to keep your curls hydrated and happy.”
  • Prioritizing hair health above all else and want hair to look healthy as possible.
  • Products like acidic shampoos and conditioners, split-end sealers, leave-in treatments, and shine serums will help your hair look as healthy as it feels.
