“Hair is an evolution,” says Redken artist Sarah Bramham. “It’s never really one thing and then the opposite. You'll have a really trendy style, and then it'll sort of shift slightly in how it’s worn.” With that said, we asked Bramham and other trusted pros what trends they expect to see dominate in 2024. Find their answers in our exclusive trend forecast ahead.
Bangs: A Bold Comeback, with Micro Bangs in the Spotlight
Bramham says bangs are making a triumphant return in 2024, and this time, all styles are fair game. “Bangs are going to be huge in the next six months—anything from a side-swept fringe to a wider draping style like curtain bangs,” she declares. While soft, face-framing layers will remain a popular style in 2024, she notes that micro bangs will be the year’s breakout star.
While undoubtedly bold, micro bangs (in other words, short-cut bangs) are a surprisingly versatile option for those looking to experiment with fringe. Whether paired with long waves, a sleek bob, or a textured pixie cut, micro bangs make for a distinctive fashion-forward look.
Textured, Airy Cuts: The Rise of Italian Bob and Elevated Emo
Pros are seeing the demand for the voluminous '70s shag replaced by requests for lighter, airer cuts. The Italian bob is a front-runner in this category. This modern take on the classic bob features a blunt cut with soft layers around the face for an effortless look that exudes sophistication.
On the other side of the spectrum is the elevated emo hair trend, a fresh and modern interpretation of the early 2000s emo hairstyles that took over Tumblr back in the day. “I'm feeling that one,” says Bramham. “Clients still want all those layers and movement, but now they're looking for a little more airiness and edginess.”
Editor tip: Pair your elevated emo style or textured, airy cut with another beauty trend we adore—siren eyes. The elongated, dramatic cat-eye effect adds an extra oomph to these face-framing styles. Straight Hair Resurgence: Silk Presses and Styling Nostalgia
Straight hair is reclaiming the spotlight, bringing back memories of high school straighteners and silk presses. “People are actually starting to ask for more straight looks when they enter the salon,” says Bramham. This trend embodies the sleek, polished look that never goes out of style. Unlike our high school days, this time around we’re gunning for minimal damage and seeking fluid, not flat, results.
For these reasons, the L'Oréal Professionnel Steampod is a must-have tool for nailing this 2024 hair trend. The innovative flat iron and styler uses steam technology for less breakage and more shine than traditional straighteners. (Check out our full Steampod explainer here.)
Those with coils and curls who want to partake in the trend can combine the power of the Steampod with Mizani’s Silk Press Agent 4-piece collection. You’ll have everything you need for a well-executed straight hairstyle free of frizz if you find yourself with no time to book a silk press appointment.
Beurre Blonde: The Epitome of Warmth and Luxury
Bid adieu to ashy, cool tones—according to L'Oréal Professionel artist Madison Sullivan, golden blonde will be the shade to watch in the new year. Biolage Professional artist Cynthia Alvarez shares these sentiments, adding, “2024 is all about embracing the warmth of beurre blonde.”
“Beurre,” the French word for “butter,” is where this luxurious hair color trend gets its name. In contrast to ashier tones, beurre blonde features rich, golden, buttery tones that exude natural radiance. Whether you opt for a full-on golden mane or incorporate these warm hues as highlights, getting the look is all about infusing hair with a captivating, sun-kissed glow.
Editor tip: Keep your blonde glowing between salon appointments with an at-home glossing range, like the Redken Acidic Color Gloss collection. The all-new system contains four products that not only enhance color but also condition. You’re left with a more silky and vibrant mane—exactly how you’ll want to sport your beurre blonde locks.
Gray Hair Color Blending: Confidence in Sporting Silver
More and more folks are opting to wear their gray hair with pride, and impeccable blending techniques are the secret behind this trend's success. Whether you're naturally graying or embracing silver hues as a style choice, cool tone coloring hacks will be a major hair trend in 2024. Expect to see stunning blends (think: herringbone highlights) that seamlessly merge natural grays with other shades.
It’s not just about aging gracefully but also about transitioning to a more low-maintenance routine. “My mature clients… just don't want the upkeep” of covering grays with base colors Bramham notes. “So what I’m doing is foiling in lowlights into their natural gray to give it dimension and also put warmth back into their skin. And they only have to do it three or four times a year.”
Hair Extensions: For Everyone and Every Texture
Extensions will be big in 2024, with more texture options than ever before. Straight, wavy, curly, coily—regardless of your natural texture, you can effortlessly achieve the length and volume you desire with extensions.
“[Hair extensions are] one of the fastest growing markets right now in the beauty space,” says Danielle Keasling, Biolage Professional global artist and executive director for Great Lengths USA. The versatility of hair extensions allows for endless creativity, making it easier than ever to switch up your look without long-term commitment. Mousse Revival: A New Generation of Formulas
Mousse is back, but forget the crunchy formulas from the early-aughts. In 2024, expect to see versatile formulas for different hair types that redefine the way we think about the OG styling product.
New mousse formulas are lightweight, non-sticky, and incredibly versatile, allowing you to create a variety of styles, from bouncy curls to voluminous waves. Redken's Full Volume Mousse and L'Oréal Professionnel Curl Expression 10-In-1 Cream-In-Mousse are must-try products, setting the standard for a new era of styling excellence.
Adding to our rekindled passion for mousse is Redken artist Lindsey Olson’s innovative "dry moussing" technique, a must-try for 2024. “A lot of people don’t want to shampoo their hair every day, so my dry mousse technique is for someone who wants to recreate their style the next day or if you want your hair to be fuller and hold a bouncy blowout better. You need to apply the mousse to your hair dry, then blow dry it in.” Expect a full tutorial in the near future!
