In 2019, Instagram has quickly become one of our favorite places to get inspired by the prettiest filters, outfits, and, most importantly, hairstyles. One particular ‘do we’ve double-tapped and screenshot is Jamie Chung’s Instagram hair. For her recent campaign with Hammitt—the popular handbag brand that creates functional and beautiful designs—the actress modeled effortless beach waves that were endlessly chic.

We got in touch with Danielle Keasling, Matrix artistic director and the mastermind behind the mane. She gave us the details about how you can copy Chung’s effortless style on your own dark brown hair.

How To Get Jamie Chung’s Instagram Hair

To steal Chung’s look, Keasling stresses the importance of starting with a strong foundation.
Jamie's natural texture was fairly average to fine and her hair held texture well. However, I always like to be prepared for anything by making sure I had the products I needed...plus, a minimal amount of extra hair extensions I could add in. I set myself up for success no matter what the conditions are.

Keasling proved her success by creating Chung’s stunning final look. It’s clear that no one does effortless, Insta-worthy hair like Keasling—so if you’d like to create this hairstyle, keep reading.

As Keasling notes, the best results stem from the right prep and foundation. For this style, she started with a freshly washed head of hair. Once the hair is clean and damp, it’s imperative to protect your strands before going in with any styling tools. Keasling recommends using Biolage R.A.W. Heat Styling Primer to act as a heat protectant while also offering soft and shapely results.

Next, add a quarter-sized amount of Matrix Bodifying Styling Jelly and run it from the roots to the ends of your hair. After, blow-dry the hair until it’s halfway dry. Before completely drying the hair, apply the Matrix Style Link Volume Builder throughout your mane and blow dry it section-by-section. This is an integral step when creating a look that will last all day long and has maximum support.

Now, it’s time to curl your way to beachy wave bliss. Keasling suggests using a 1.25-inch curling iron for this style. Before going in with direct heat, use the Matrix Style Link Heat Buffer to protect your strands and lock in the curls with a smooth and shiny finish. When curling the hair, take 2-inch sections at a time and work your way through your mane. The artist recommends gently tousling the curl once it’s released from the iron to create a loose wave instead of a stiff ringlet.

Once the hair is completely curled, apply the Matrix Style Link Texture Builder to your roots and throughout the hair to support extra volume and texture. Last but certainly not least, Keasling suggests finishing with the Biolage R.A.W. Frizz Control Styling Spray to help smooth down any flyaways while adding light shaping and a natural sheen.

Now that you know how to copy Chung’s enviable waves, it’s only right to try it out for yourself and have a photoshoot of your own.
