L’Oréal Professionnel’s new Serie Expert Metal Detox Shampoo and Hair Mask promises to detoxify the hair of metals (caused by the minerals in hard water) to give you color vibrancy and nourished, shiny hair. Our Head of Content at Hair.com, Jackie, reviewed this system on her own hair, which she washes twice weekly using her home hard well water. Find out why she’s hooked and shop Metal Detox for yourself below!
Growing up with well water, I’ve always known the havoc hard water can wreak on your hair—leaving it limp, dull, and brittle. One of the many benefits of going to college in New York City was access to the city water, and my hair flourished during those four years. It was growing, shiny, and soft—and then I graduated, moved back home, and...well, it wasn’t anymore.
In the time between college, moving home, and now, I’ve moved quite a bit with my husband and thought I’d never, ever, move to a home with well water again. But what’s that saying about making plans again? Fast forward to the year after my daughter was born, we found a house in the woods, close to our families, and fell in love. The only problem, however, was it had well water —hard well water—and in the months that followed our move, I noticed my hair taking a turn for the worse.
Whether it was the addition of single process hair color every three weeks to cover my gray, the stress of raising a toddler, or a mix of everything—this time around, my hair was not happy. There seemed to be no shower head filter, clarifying shampoo, or hydrating hair mask that could fix it.
You’d imagine my elation (yes, a strong word but a worthy one) when I had a meeting with the L’Oreal Professionnel team on the upcoming launch of their new Metal Detox hair care line. I started counting down the days until launch, and once I shared that I had hard water at home and hated what it was doing to my hair, the team was kind enough to give me a sample set of the shampoo and hair mask to test out for myself.
Now, a month later, writing this review and getting ready to place a restock purchase on Hair.com, I can say they made a winner. My hair has NEVER looked better (yes, even during my college NYC city water years), and I have Metal Detox to thank. What Is L’Oreal Professionnel Metal Detox?
Hard water affects SO many households in the United States. In fact, it’s reported that up to 85 percent of US homes have it. Basically, hard water is water that has a higher than usual concentration of minerals and metals like calcium and iron. My water at home is heavy in iron—and it causes my hair to look and feel dry, brittle, and very dull. What’s more, the buildup of those minerals and metals can be a large reason your color service at the salon doesn’t turn out the way you hoped. It can affect the outcome of your salon service and the vibrancy of your hue between salon appointments.
Metal Detox is a 3-step system formulated with Glicoamine—one in-salon treatment and then two at-home products. It works to neutralize the metal on your hair before a color service, detox your hair after the service, and then prevent future particles from penetrating the hair fiber and wreaking havoc.
My L’Oreal Professionnel Metal Detox Review
Since I started using the Metal Detox Shampoo and Hair Mask in my routine, my hair has felt softer, smoother, and my color (which I get done every three weeks because...grays) has remained vibrant. I use the shampoo and the hair mask at home once every two days when it’s wash day. A little goes a long way with both products. I put a quarter-size amount of the shampoo in my palms, emulsify, and then massage through my dark brown hair. After rinsing well, I use a small scoop of the hair mask and coat my hair in it. I leave it in for three minutes before rinsing well and then moving on to my styling routine. I’m nearly at the end of my bottles after this trial and will 100 percent be repurchasing from Hair.com!
