I have an American mother and a Turkish father, but if you looked at me, it’d be easy to mistake me for a full-blooded Turk. I have olive skin that tans (never burns), dark brown eyes, and thick, deep chestnut-brown hair. At least, I did for about 28 years. And then the pandemic happened, and I decided to live out my lifelong fantasy of going rockstar blonde because, hey—if it didn’t look as great as I’d hoped, at least no one would see it. Thankfully, my worries were for naught: For the past six months, I’ve been happily living out my platinum blonde dreams. Admittedly, it takes a lot of work—more, even, than I anticipated—and that’s without even taking brassiness into consideration. My perfectly sleek silver takes on an unpleasant coppery tint very quickly. So, I am constantly on the lookout for a shampoo and conditioner that can zap away the brassiness and breathe life back into my bleached tresses.
Thankfully, in my work as a beauty editor, I rarely have to look too far to find new products to try (it’s a major perk of the job). And recently, a colleague asked if I’d be interested in trying Matrix Total Results So Silver Shampoo and Conditioner. The purple-hued hair care duo, she told me, is designed to banish brassiness and restore silver strands. Obviously, I accepted—and after trying the pair out, I feel confident in saying that my once-endless search for the perfect color toning shampoo and conditioner has finally come to a close. Keep scrolling for all the deets on the Matrix Total Results So Silver system, plus my full review on the color-enhancing shampoo and conditioner.
What does Matrix So Silver do?
If you’re hoping to banish brass between salon appointments, you’ll want to have the Matrix Total Results So Silver system in your routine. Matrix Total Results So Silver Purple Shampoo and Conditioner is a professional clarifying system that contains violet pigments to tone brassy blonde hair.
These formulas cleanse and condition while neutralizing unwanted brassy warmth and eliminate dull, yellow tones. They add brightness and illuminate highlights and all shades of blonde, ranging from gray to platinum.
Can you use Matrix So Silver everyday?
Since these products contain pigment, we recommend using them once or twice per week or whenever your blonde shade needs a refresh. When you’re not using color-toning shampoo and conditioner, you should cleanse and condition with a color-safe system like Matrix Total Results Color Obsessed Shampoo and Conditioner.
Can you use Matrix So Silver on dry hair?
If you’re dealing with dry hair, you can still use the Matrix Total Results So Silver system. The Total Results So Silver Conditioner is formulated to replenish dry, brittle hair while giving your strands a high-shine, glossy look.
How I Use Matrix Total Results So Silver Shampoo And Conditioner In My Routine
I’ll admit that when I agreed to try the So Silver duo, my expectations weren’t super high: I like my blonde to look silver—gray, almost—and I had yet to find a shampoo or conditioner that could sufficiently take the warmth out of my blonde and restore my salon-fresh silver shade. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I first opened the bottle of shampoo. I poured a generous amount into my hands and was happy to see how pigmented the formula was. It’s a rich, deep violet color—honestly, if I didn’t know better, I’d have assumed it was a purple hair dye. But in my experience, the more pigmented the shampoo, the better.
I massaged a palmful onto my scalp and lathered up. The shampoo created a pleasant lather—it felt light, almost silky. As per the instructions on the bottle, you can rinse the shampoo off immediately or leave it in for a few minutes to help encourage brass removal and give your hair a more cool finish. I opted for the latter. I left the rich, purple lather in my hair for approximately three minutes, then rinsed my hair under lukewarm water. Note that it might stain your hands a little; if you’re concerned about staining your skin (or nails), I recommend donning latex gloves before washing your mane.
After shampooing, I dispensed a palmful of the So Silver Conditioner into my palms and again massaged the lightweight formula throughout my strands, from just below the roots to the very ends. Immediately, I noticed it made my hair feel extremely soft—a challenge, considering how many times I’ve bleached my hair in the past year—and my tangles quickly melted away.
When I stepped out of the shower and inspected my (admittedly, sopping-wet) strands, I immediately noticed a difference. My hair looked far less yellow than it had prior to hopping in the shower and seemed to have a good deal more shine than usual. To get the most accurate results, I decided to let my hair air-dry, sans product, since that’s how I typically style my hair (or not style, as the case may be). I then snapped some photos and inspected the difference between my hair pre-treatment and post-treatment—you can see my Matrix Total Results So Silver before and after above. It’s a noticeable difference; my blonde is far cooler (much closer to the silvery hue I prefer) and appears shinier and smoother. It’s also a lot softer than usual, and again, this is after a single-use. Suffice it to say, I was impressed.
The instructions on the Matrix So Silver Shampoo and Conditioner bottles advise using the duo once or twice per week. Since my blonde hair gets brassy fairly quickly and I prefer the coolest version of blonde possible, I plan to use the system twice or three times per week. So far, I’ve used it twice—but I absolutely plan on adding the system into my regular hair care routine. This bleached blonde gives the Matrix So Silver Shampoo and Conditioner a definite seal of approval.
