When it comes to fashion, it’s safe to say that blast-from-the-past looks are more popular than ever. During fashion weeks around the world, you will often see models walking some of the biggest runway shows sporting our favorite clothing and hairstyle choices from decades ago. The throwback trend is still going strong, with some of the top designers and stylists in the industry showcasing nostalgic styles during this year’s New York Fashion Week. This year, one brand in particular really caught our eye.
On September 9, Escada made its New York Fashion Week debut. During the German-owned brand’s SS19 show at the Park Avenue Armory, celebrity stylist Guido Palau was front and center to create one of the most memorable looks of the night: a slicked back, voluminous quiff inspired by one of the most iconic hairstyles of the ‘80s.
When asked about the look, Palau defined it as a modern take on the ‘80s quiff.
We’re here at the Escada show, where I’ve done an ‘80s boyish quiff….I’ve used Redken Guts 10 Volume Spray Foam to get some volume in the hair before I do the soft boyish movement or curling it with a small-barreled iron and leaving the curls defined...The hair is light, it has movement and ease. It’s the gesture of the ‘80s, using as least brushwork as possible to keep it from going too retro. It’s a nod to that period versus a replication.
This isn’t the first time the esteemed stylist has pulled inspiration from the past for the runway. Earlier this year, Palau stunned the crowd at Alexander Wang’s New York Fashion Week show when he created a sleek, brushed back hairstyle using the ‘90s-inspired claw clip. The triumphant return of the claw clip sparked major buzz throughout the beauty world.
Loving Palau’s nod to the ‘80s? Luckily, we have all the details on how you can try the look for yourself.
Start with clean, dry hair and create a side part using your fingers about three fourths of the way over the right side your head. Beginning around the hairline, apply a small amount of the Redken Guts 10 Volume Spray Foam from the roots to the mid-lengths of your hair.
Once the product is applied, begin blow drying your strands, sweeping the sides of your hair up and back away from your face as you go. Scrunch around the front of your hairline to give volume over to one side.
Using a 2-inch barrel curling iron, begin curling to add natural movement throughout your mane. To complete the look, apply a few spritzes of the Redken Wind Blown 05 to add texture and volume around the hairline and crown.
